[...] Spring welcomed the resurgence of longer length knitted tops and T’s (blog entry), and Autumn and Winter welcomes them again. Knitwear and shirting have also followed suit, making almost a decades’ worth of hipbone length tops and collared shirts look dated. While it’s a super idea to buy longer length tops, it doesn’t mean that you have to disregard the hip bone length tops and shirts in your closet. You can update them by popping a longer length camisole or t-shirt underneath, thereby adding the length and the interest of an extra layer. [...]

[...] Select tops with length that cover at least half of your bottom (and going longer is also a good idea). If your striped tops are shorter then that, pop a longer length T underneath to lengthen your line. [...]

You are right about regular long T's looking like a nighties on extra petite women such as yourself. It's a nuisance to have them hemmed, but the "new look" longer T layerd with the appropriate shorter T or shrug will still look good on you if you hem them at the correct longer length for your petite frame. Longer T's also need to ruch at the sides around the tummy area which will pull them up anyway. They are slim fittting around the hips precisely for this purpose.

You certainly won't need to stay away from long T's! Having them ruch and peep out from under your cropped jacket is flattering and trendy.

While I think the longer T does look good on most women, being a woman who's only 4'11", the longer Ts end up making me look like a midget, I mean, a real midget. The longer Ts seem so popular that it's now hard for me to find a T that doesn't look like a nightie. I've actually bought some long Ts only to then have them hemmed! Am I right to stay away from the long Ts? Is there a way that us petite folk can still look good in these!?
