Can you be too old for jeans?

September 26th, 2006

The answer is “no”. Women well into their 60’s and 70’s can wear jeans with style. It’s a question of…

  1. Finding a pair with the right cut and wash. Older women need to opt for dark blue washes that are higher in the rise and boot cut at the hem.
  2. Matching them with the right tops and shoes. The key is to keep the matched up items a tad smarter then the norm (even for casual purposes).  The older we get, the smarter we need to become in our everyday dressing. Casual collared shirts, styled knit tops with jackets and dressy flats are more age-appropriate than cru-neck t-shirts with sneakers.

60+ women who wear jeans with style not only look effortlessly young for their age, but feel young at heart!

I totally think you’re right, that as we age, we need to get smarter in our casual dressing.

I used to slob around in baggy tees and jeans in my college days. But now that I’m in my mid-30s, that kind of outfit doesn’t feel casual–it just feels sloppy.

Unfortunately, looking “smarter” requires a bit more patience and energy. And I actually have to try things on instead of buying the biggest size! LOL

It’s music to my ears that you feel the need to dress a dash smarter the older you become Carla. You are right about the little bit of extra effort involved in accomplishing this - but increasing your style quotient in this way will also make you feel better inside, and for that reason, it seems entirely worth it!

I am 61 years old and I am a school bus driver. I have been walking and been working at losing weight. I like dressing young and I like wearing jeans. I feel that 95% of the shows are for young women and there is hardly any shows for older women. I really think that there should be more shows for older women. What is up with that? Does anyone care? I would love to see that. Come on people, do something about this. Mary Jane

I am 60 years old and I still enjoy wearing jeans and have recently bought a pair of ‘dress’ jeans which look a little smarter. However, because they are smarter I want to wear shoes but this is now creating a bit of a problem!! Wearing heels all day does not always work for me so alternate and wear flats but but now find that the hemline is either trailing on the floor if I do wear flats or finishes somewhere around my ankle if I wear heels! Is the only answer to have two pairs of the same item? What does everyone else do??
