Short shorts? Perhaps not.

June 14th, 2007

I’m writing about pant lengths again (my pet peeve). Unless you’re a skinny teenager, in your twenties or Kate Moss, refrain from wearing short shorts. Do not believe what fashion magazines tell you about this item being the hottest look for Summer. No matter how firm and fabulous your legs are, you need youth on your side to pull off this look.

Walk shorts that finish at the knee (either just above, on, or just below) remains the most flattering length for any woman because your legs look their longest and slimmest at this point. Raise that hemline to reveal a significant portion of your bare thighs and you’re dressing inappropriately for your age. You’ll get away with wearing short shorts for running and cycling when you’re older because it’s important to wear the correct gear when engaging in a sporting activity. But this is where I draw the line. Mutton dressed like lamb is unstylish. Keep it chic, classy and knee-length.

I’m not sure walk shorts are flattering on me… I am very short–about 5′–and knee-length shorts tend to make me look chopped off and even shorter. I confess to wearing short-shorts (I’m in my early 30s)…. but I swear I have the legs for them! ;)

  2. Shannon Says:

I feel the same way. My legs are long and skinny and I feel walk shorts (unless very slim fitting) make my legs look skinnier with no shape. I do have a few pair, but I also wear a couple pair of short shorts and I am 36! I am not young, but have better legs, thanks to a lot of work, than some young girls that wear them. Should I really reconsider???

  3. Rebecca Says:

    I agree with you, Angie.

What do you think about wearing leggings under shorts?

  4. Meg Meg Says:

Agreed. I much prefer walking shorts over short shorts. Some women can get away with short shorts, but the vast majority look better in walking shorts. Of course, if you do have the legs for them like Morgan and Shannon, then by all means wear them. It is true that walking shorts are hard to wear if you are very short, but if you can’t wear short shorts then long pants or skirts may be best. If your legs are skinny, you might want was to try looser fitting walking shorts with pockets down the sides (like a carpenter or cargo pant style) in order to add a little bulk. Capris might be a better option, though, if you’re tall enough.

I generally don’t like wearing shorts, period. But if I had to, I’d wear knee-length Bermudas…. And short shorts just make me look so frumpy and oddly proportioned.

  6. Sara Says:

I’m short, 5′2, and knee length shorts make me look stumpy. I think an inseam somewhere in between, like 5 or 7 inches, is more universally flattering.

  7. Carolyn Says:

I am 5′0 and gave up on knee length shorts until finding some recently at Banana Republic. They are the Ryan fit and hit me just below the knee which is more flattering. The white ones are lined and the prerfect summer fabric. I even wore a size smaller than ususal-always a boost! So I bought 2 pair.

for me the question is where do i find these shorts? i find these short hard to find. the only ones i’ve found sit too far down on the waist or cost $60.

    it’s hard to find clothes when you’re over 40-post baby-still sassy :)
