Jeans for pretty pears
June 21st, 2007It isn’t always easy finding a pair of jeans when you are a pretty pear. Here are three important style features that will help to narrow your search:
- A contoured waistband which starts higher on your bottom and dips down lower in front is essential. This feature will mould your curvy bottom and prevent baggy fabric buildup at crotch point.
- Just enough ease on the thigh area for a flattering “skimming effect”. Too much ease on the thighs will make you look bigger than you are so keep your fit fairly snug.
- Boot cut or flared leg openings automatically balance out your larger bottom with your smaller top. Straight and tapered leg openings will have the opposite effect, so stay clear of them.
If the back waistband of your jeans still stands away from the small of your back, invest in having them altered. This can cost anything from $13 to $30. It’s worth the expense because when they fit you perfectly you’ll feel fabulous every time you put them on.
After dressing many pretty pears, below are my recommendations for the best American jeans brands and fits for this body type. Bear in mind that pretty pear-shapes are not created equally. Some woman carry their curves on their thighs, others on their bottom, and some in both areas. You might find that you’ll need to try on a few of these brands before you find that perfect pair:
- Lucky “Easy Riders”
- Lucky “Sweet ‘n Low”
- AG “Club”
- Paige Premium “Robertson”
- DKNY “Soho”
- Calvin Klein “classic boot cuts”
- Joes “ the honey”
If you have a brand and cut that you would recommend for pretty pears, I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Enjoy your deliciously feminine physique!
Lucky “Easy Riders”, AG “Clubs” and Paige Premium “Robertsons”, all available at department stores.

Victoria Secret also has great jeans for pears. Express has those denim looking pants in blue and black that are good for pears too.
I’m paying $40.00 for alterations to pant waists. It’s crazy expensive, but there is nothing like having pants that feel like they were made for you.
As with all pants, this pear tries to get them extra long and wears them with pointy toe heels.

Stacey and Clinton always caution their petite ladies against bootcut/flare jeans, but always tell their pears to wear them. What if you’re a petite pear? As you probably know, altering bootcut and flared jeans isn’t really an option because it changes the shape of the jeans in unpredictable ways. I’m not really that pear-shaped (and I think the size of my boobs kind of balances everything out anyway), so I find that flare legs make my look stumpy. It’s confusing. Finding perfect jeans and the perfect dress are two things that elude me to this day,

I find that bootcuts that are tight at the knees actually accentuate my ’saddle bags”. Thanks for the recommendations, unfortunately many of those brands are unavailable in Australia. I haven’t had real luck with jeans yet.

Maya and Deedre, I think straight legged jeans might be your best bet if boot-cuts jeans don’t work for you. Just stay away from skinny jeans or tapered pants of any kind unless you really want emphasize your hips.
As for me, I do tend towards boot-cut because I’m tall and curvy. I’m technically an hour-glass and not a pear, but below the waist we have similar problems (yes, I don’t like my thighs). I like the Gap curvy jeans and long-and-lean jeans. The long-and-lean jeans from Gap also work for me (the idea is that they make you look long and lean, not that they are designed only for people who are long and lean).
Another brand I tried on that worked well was a pair from the Jessica Simpson line.
Unfortunately, none of the jeans I found at the regular big box stores worked. I’ve had to learn to spend a little extra money to get jeans that fit right, but it’s great when they do. And like Angie suggests, it’s worth it to get them tailored if there is just one little fixable thing wrong.
I wish I did know more brands to suggest, but usually I wear A-line skirts or dresses - the ultimate cover for thicker thighs.

A-line dresses and skirts are the perfect solution for those of us that have a little extra from the waist down. Why look mediocre in jeans if you can look fab in a dress and skirt. You’ve got that down brilliantly Meg.
Maya & Deedre, pear shaped ladies can wear straight legs or skinnies when they wear tunics or dresses over their jeans. Skinnies are also great for tucking into boots and Beyonce does this all the time with her fabulously pear shaped frame. I’ve written many a blog entry about these points if you peruse through the body type category on the side bar. Boot cuts and flares are still the best denim options for the pear -shaped frame if you get them at the right length for your height to begin with. Straight legs tend to make pretty pears look dumpy and you don’t want that.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Angie. I forgot about skinnies with boots or tunics or dresses. Those are great ideas.

[…] Absolutely. Finding a fab pair of jeans can be challenging, so when you come across a pair that you love because they’re comfortable and fit well; it’s worth every penny. You will feel glorious in them and will wear them constantly, thereby whittling down the cost-per-wear to nothing. […]

I love Levi’s 515 jeans. They are bootcut and stretch and great for a petite, pear shape.

I love PacSun’s Huntingtonflare jeans. Not only do they fit great for (I am definitely pear shape), but they also come in long lengths for ladies with long legs.
