Day Dresses

June 29th, 2007

Dresses don’t need to be “dressy”. While frocks are my first choice for formal occasions, there are plenty of casual, comfortable and practical dresses that can be worn to work and play every day.

Day dresses are best…

  • in durable, casual fabrications like thick cottons, jersey knits and viscose blends
  • in A-line silhouettes because they allow you to stride feely. Straighter styles restrict your movement.
  • when they cover up enough of your upper body that you don’t feel exposed.

The best thing about a dress is that you can slip it on with a pair of shoes and possibly one accessory and you’re done. You don’t need to worry about layering, mixing-and-matching or pulling clothing straight. If you can get your head around the fact that dresses needn’t be saved for special occasions, you’ll enjoy them as another practical daily ensemble (especially when it’s hot). Pretty pear body types look particularly good in A-line frocks and should make the most of our dress season this Summer.

these dresses don’t seem as enticing as your choices usually are. i’m trying to expand the stores i look at, and was quite taken with what i saw at mango today.

I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed Mango. That remains one of favourite places to shop in Seattle.

When the weather’s warm in the summer, there’s nothing I’d rather wear than a day dress. I like the fit of the orange one above, even though it’s brighter than what I usually gravitate towards. I got a very similar wrap dress (but in a black and white print) at H&M last summer and wore it to death. I’ve been stalking the clothing racks there all season in hope of a repeat, but so far, no luck.

    Yes! Yes! Yes!

I’m an hour glass, but I still feel uncomfortable about my thighs. I discovered day dresses this year and hardly ever wear pants. Dresses (in the right material) can be so comfy. I feel like it’s my little secret that I can look so put together in something so easy to wear and so comfy. I call my day dresses “my glorified pj’s”. Plus, I definitely get more compliments in the dresses than I ever did in jeans.

[…] generally have a hard time encouraging clients to wear day dresses. Most of them feel the look is fussy, too dressed up, inappropriate, impractical and uncomfortable. […]
