Can redheads wear red?

July 2nd, 2007

Of course they can. Nicole Kidman was breathtaking wearing red in “Moulin Rouge” and more recently in her flaming red couture gown at the Oscars. Redheads like Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore often wear red and look absolutely sensational.

In reality ”red” hair is more orange than red and these two colours (red and orange) work beautifully together. It’s much like mixing red and orange tulips in the same vase, (one of my favourite floral combinations). Redheads are not created equally. It’s a question of finding the shade that compliments your red hair in the best possible way. It is also a matter of individual taste. I personally love the striking effect of redheads in bright red.

There’s no getting away from the fact that this is an incredibly eye-catching combination. So if you’re a redhead and you love red, wear it with conviction and expect to be noticed.

AS a red head, i have always stayed far away from red and green - not wanting to be mistaken for a Leprochan or a strawberry…i will try red - bright red, but with reservation - as i still think that red is a color more suited for blondes or brunettes…but who knows? Maybe this will become my signature color! :)

[…] And, btw, yes, red-heads can wear red. It’s an analogous color scheme. […]

As a redhead I’d avoided wearing red for pretty much my whole life. UNTIL I was in a weeks-long outdoor performance where we wore a number of different red dresses. Because all the dresses everyone wore were different (no two were alike), I wound up wearing a few different shades of red and it was a great chance to see this as not just possible, but even kind of pretty and appealing.

My hair is naturally a pretty blah brunette, but I love to add red - whether it’s strawberry blonde, red red, or a dark warm brown. It works well on me because I have fair skin and my dad actually had strawberry blonde hair (I also have a brother whose hair is red and I ended up marrying a redhead). In fact, one of my favorite memories is when Rue MacClanahan (Blanche from Golden Girls) complimented me on my (dyed) hair color in high school.

That said, one of my favorite colors to wear is red. It is hard finding the right red for me to wear since I don’t want to bring too much attention to my cheeks (which tend to flush easily). However, I’ve had great luck with cool reds. I’ve started looking out for exceptional cool red items. Recently, I bought a red leather purse and two pairs of shoes. Currently, I’m looking for dresses in cool reds since I shrunk out of my last one (oh darn!).

My partner is not fond of bright colours and always tells me that there are 4 standard colour that always look good Black, White, Silver & Red. So we then got into the arguement that I can’t wear red etc.. After him putting up the fight that nicole kidman wears red and i started to google and found your sitr.. I never really thought of the orange/red combination because my hair is very bright orange, so I might just look for very bright red!

I have long auburn hair and wear red all the time. I receive compliments all the time so much for that style tip. Think of Julianne Moore in THE END OF THE AFFAIR. Many of her period pieces in the film were red and looked elegant and unforgettable with her auburn hair. A lot of my coats and business suits are red and it is just the color I am drawn to.

It’s fair enough to say that redheads can wear red, but Nicole Kidman was blonde at the Oscars.

People like me, who have bright red hair along the lines of young Jane Asher, have a much smaller range to work with. Bright red looks terrible on us, but but more romantic, deep tones are OK.

The real trick is that you have to match the color to your *skin tone* more than to your hair. We have trouble wearing red because we usually have rosy untertones to our skin, which is exaggerated by red clothes. Regardless of whether the clothes clash/compete with the hair, it’s most important to make sure your skin doesn’t look blotchy and flushed or washed out. Purple, brown, and gold based reds help.
