Perfect pants length: the exception proves the rule

August 7th, 2007

I have been preaching my perfect pants length mantra for as long as I can remember because it’s a fashion faux pas that I feel especially strongly about. While the default perfect pants length (when hems skim the surface of the ground) works beautifully for boot-cuts, flares and wide-legged pants and jeans; it won’t work for skinnies, tapered-legs and super straight-leg pants and jeans. Narrow pant-leg openings scrunch at the ankle and over your heels instead of skimming the surface of the ground no matter how long their in-seam. It’s therefore fab to wear these types of long pants ankle length. This is an acceptable and ultra fashion forward look. And thus far the only exception to my very rigid rule.

Angie, I actually came across another fashion-focused site and the author swore on her last dollar that the skinny jean was on its way to fashion purgatory again; I totally disagree. I wore a pair to a Beyonce concert with some patent leather, mary jane stilettos and a cropped metallic linen jacket and felt so fab, that I wanted to get on the stage and shimmy with her!! Even with me being pleasantly curvy, the stretch was comfortable and it gave me a tight and toned feeling and to really set the jean off, there were zippers on the side; talk about fabulous! I personally recommend peep-toe or closed toe pumps with the skinnies. I also had my hair in a chic bob (which has also made a huge comeback in TinselTown); thank you Vidal Sassoon and Nancy Kwan!

Sounds like you truly looked and felt fabulous Candice. Bravo!

The skinny is around for at least another few seasons. The lean trouser look is just as hot for Autumn 2007 as it’s wide-legged counterpart. My personal prediction is that as long as there are voluminous tops and jackets- there will be streamlined bottoms to match them. Quite a few stylists were fast to say that the skinny wouldn’t be around for longer than a season and we are heading for our 3rd season of skinnies.

I have been hearing about these trends of “volume” and “cocoon-like” being very hot in the fall of 07 in dresses, tops and coats. Now, I as a fuller-figured gal, have some reservations about putting on something that is described as looking like a cocoon! Of course, every model at Fashion Week that sported a voluminous or cocoon-like ensemble was a size 0 and the trend looked absolutely fierce on them. Maybe that is a topic we could discuss as we enter in the fall, Angie. See, there’s your next article topic right there!! You can pay me later LOL!

Angie! Just noticed, when I clicked on the link above that says: “perfect pants length” in the first line, the link is wrong. There is a missing “.” in front of the “com” in the link URL!!
