I have to (sadly) agree with you on the shoulder adjustments. I find that for most clothes, if I could only take a 1" pinch out of the shoulder seams, they would fit me like a dream...unfortunately, I've been told by many seamstresses that that adjustment isn't feasible unless the garment is sleeveless. Any suggestions?

Hey - you can do a lot of this "tailoring" yourself & save oodles of $$ - I am short & always take up my ow hems - all you need to know is the hem stitch! And buy a mending kit with lots of little spools of thread in lots of colors and some sewing needles & you can sew seams YOURSELF - or even do it on a machine.

I had the waist altered on a pair of jeans which cost somewhere around $25 I think. The hem altering on the same pair of jeans was about $8. But definitely well worth it (the jeans were only $20 and the altering was FANTASTIC).

Your prices are dead on. I just had a pair of linen pants altered in the waist for $13.00 - so you've pretty much covered the spread! ;-)

Great post - thanks!

I just had a dress and a pr of shorts altered for $50.00. The dress required a lot of work and two sessions. I am very pleased with the results and will return to her in the future.

I think your prices are correct- I had the unfortunate experience of having a sari altered. $200 later...it's still not perfect as it was done by inexperienced seamstresses to begin with. Ouch!
