Must confess that I've been leery of knit dresses in the past because they always seem to bag at the seat area. Was I wearing the wrong kind of knit? I think I've only ever bought cotton knit dresses. However, the tunic look would work quite well with other fabrics too, I imagine, like cotton, synthetics, etc. I think the leggings and high boots idea is wonderful, I can just wear regular socks with leggings too, so I won't have to worry about tights ripping at the toes.
