Difficult dropped waist coats

November 20th, 2007

The dropped waist coat is not a mainstream item, but it’s certainly making a fashion statement. It was particularly popular in London stores a few months ago and I’m seeing more of this silhouette here in the US. The style is sweet but hard to wear. You’ll need to be slender, tall and small hipped to pull this one off. It’s instantly widening and leg-shortening on most body types, especially if there is gathering on the hip seam. I say no to this style if you’re not a gazelle-like rectangle or an inverted triangle.

Ha! Now I’m dying to go try one on …

I really love this look, but I’m not sure where to look for it. Where did you find these? Any recommendations?

This is what I struggle with the most: trying to elongate my torso without putting emphasis on my hips. Drop waist styles used to look good on me because they made me less short-waisted, and since I had narrow hips, I could easily pull them off. Now not so much. It’s so hard to know how to dress when you realize your body isn’t the same as it was 5 years ago!

I looked at this type of coat in a Victoria’s Secret catalogue today. I’ve always wondered who could wear that coat. It looks interesting kind of. I’m very small so obviously not me.

Caitlin, these coats are available from Arden B., Nordstrom and Bebe. You can click on the pictures to go directly to the retailer’s website.

Okay, I’m a bit baffled, because this seems like it would work much better than those hideous waist-tied trenchcoat that makes this hourglass figure look like a stuffed sausage….

There are lots of ill-fitting trench coats around and that’s probably why you feel this way Stephanie. A trench on your body type can look great if it’s correctly tailored, single-breasted and the belt loops are in the correct place. It’s all about the cut of the garment.
