Chunky heels and short dresses
November 27th, 2007Above-the-knee shift, sheath and tunic dresses are extremely popular this season, and if I’m not mistaken this trend will continue into Spring. Wearing the correct type of heel with a raised hemline is imperative if you’re to keep your look hip and chic. It’s best to wear chunkier heels or a shoe with a little more foot coverage when sporting a mini dress or skirt. A skimpy dress paired with a skinny heeled shoe gives the illusion that you’re going to topple over, but a chunky heel somehow balances out the look.
The exception: skinny-heeled, knee-length boots with raised hemlines somehow works. The extra coverage that you get from the boots achieves a striking balance.
The haute couture illustrations are a little over the top, but they do perfectly illustrate the mini dress with chunky shoe look.

This may be a little bit off topic….
I went to my husband’s 20th reunion last weekend. The invitations said “business casual”. As soon as we got there, I noticed several woman wearing knee length knit dresses with black boots. By the time we left, I’d say 30% of the women were wearing that same uniform. Now, as much as I like that look, seeing so many women dressed the same way, has made it stale in my eyes. (Who wants to look like everyone else?) I chose to dress down, since my husband wore dark jeans and a dress shir. I followed a few of guidelines I’ve learned here and felt fabulous in my fabulous blouse and statement jewlery!
So thank you Angie, and You Look Fab for giving women the confidence to create our own individual signature styles. Even my husband looked fab among all the pleated pants and V neck sweaters!

Thanks for sharing this with us Nicole. Personal style begins and ends with a strong sense of yourself and it sounds like you and hubby sported a super signature look. No one wants to look like a cookie cutter version of someone else. You were brave to arrive “smart casually” too. The business casual dress code means no denim, but the flop-proof outfit reigned supreme and you felt fab. I also love that you made an effort to compliment what your husband wore. Bravo!

For those interested in the “look for less” I noticed Forever 21 has quite a few of these chunky heeled shoes.

Nicole brings up a good point. As much as I love the black knit dress with black boots (I wear it myself), is it getting tired or overdone? And what are your thoughts or suggestions Angie?

Hose and shoes instead of boots (with dresses and skirts). Most of us where pants and jeans all the time….skirts and dresses make a refreshing change. You’ll need to stick to the dress code though…so be sure to follow that through.

[…] We’re talking about a soaring three-inch-plus chunky heel with wide foot straps. It’s the high fashion look to wear with raised hemlines, clamdiggers and skinnies. I can appreciate the 70’s inspired sandal style, on someone else. I’m never sporting strappy […]
