Sheer hose, sheer pleasure
December 7th, 2007Black opaques are all the rage this season, but sheer black hose can often look more flattering. There is something about the translucency of sheer hose (either in black or a colour) that is leg slimming and leg lengthening. I include sheer hose with self colored patterns (like spots or diamonds) in this category.
This is not to say that opaques, thicker ribbed tights, and patterned tights won’t look great when they complement an outfit. Sheer black hose was often a favourite choice with my clients this season, particularly for the additional coverage they offer in both everyday and party wear ensembles.
My point is that with all the exciting hose to choose from, we forget about simple sheer hose. And I definitely feel prettier in sheer black hose as opposed to thick tights. So don’t feel compelled to wear elaborate hose when the simple things in life are often best.

I agree - but where do we buy great tights without breaking the bank?

What brand or brands do you suggest for the sheer black hose?

Good advice Angie! I find sheer hose to be a dressier option, but like that opaque tights make me feel freer to wear slightly shorter styles than I might otherwise.

I agree - I feel prettier in sheers too! The problem for me is that opaques are so popular now, and I am so used to seeing them in magazines and advertisements, that when I put on sheers with an outfit and look in the mirror something always seems off. Could you maybe do a follow up post with some specific looks that you like best with sheer hose?

Good point! I always feel “lighter” and more fashionable in sheer hose than in thick tights.

Interesting and informative as always. I tend to get all panicky this time of year, worrying about what I don’t have enough of or what I forgot to buy. It would not have occurred to me to just buy regular hose.

I’m so glad you brought up the topic of hose, Angie! While black and brown opaques are indispensables as far as I’m concerned, I’ve been wearing black and grey sheers to the office through the years because air conditioning demands it. Leather pumps are so much more comfortable with a pair of sheer hose as well. I’m still afraid to wear nude sheers, however, since absolutely no one gets away with them at the moment.

Nude mesh hose and nude mock micro fishnets (that are backed) are worth a bash Lulu. The Rack is your best bet for affordable hose Ashley. Of course, first prize is that you try not to snag the hose that you have on!

What is “mesh” hose, Angie? I am picturing straightforward sheer hose.

It’s a little hard to explain Christy, but Calvin Klein sells it in most department stores…..it looks like a very fine mesh.

Thank you! I will look for it.

Gotta love sheers! Those Calvin Klein hose are lovely. Thanks, Angie!
