The shape of denim in 2008
January 17th, 2008The hottest denim silhouette for 2008 is a slim fit jean with a wider leg opening that’s no more than 8 inches on the half circumference. This makes it wider than a skinny or straight leg, but not quite as wide as a flare leg. This so called new silhouette sounds like a good old modern-classic boot cut to me, and most of us have at least one pair of those. Don’t worry ladies, as far as I can gather, last year’s denim silhouettes continue to reign supreme. Skinnies, straight legs, boot cuts and wide legs are all fab.

Choose one or have fun with more denim silhouettes this year. I take pleasure in wearing all of the styles above, but I’m enjoying my straight legs the most right now.

I love the trouser style denim the most right now!

The first pair of jeans remind me of the tummy tuck jeans which Nordstrom sells. You pay a bit more but the results are quite stunning especially if you want to hide a few extra pounds.

Angie,
What type of shoes do you prefer with your straight leg? Also, would the slim fit boot cut be appropriate for smart-casual at work, or these purely going out jeans?
Thanks,
Christie

I like lots of different types of shoes with straight legs. I personally wear ballet flats, converse sneakers, heeled pumps, booties and 80’s style ankle boots (with my jeans tucked into them), with my straight leg jeans.
Smart casual jeans are for work and going out and the boot cuts in the picture are a good representation.

I think I reached the limit of my tolerance for jeans recently. They have been all I wear for my whole life but I’m thinking it’s time to just switch to pants. I don’t know if it would make a difference, but all these jeans pose their own unique set of problems for me, such that I’ve ended up with a drawer full of denim that doesn’t really flatter me just because there isnt any other kind!

Maya, there is a pair of jeans out there for you. I promise! However, I think it’s great that you are venturing out of your jeans rut and dare I say pants rut. Try dresses and skirts too. There is life after jeans and these alternative items do seem to be neglected.

I’m skeptical, Angie.
Skinny and straight legs do my butt and monster thighs no favors. Flared, wideleg, and trouser jeans are too voluminous for my petite self.
I love the slim bootcut jeans you have featured here, but they would be way too long for me, and if I hemmed them, the leg opening would lose its shape.
Maybe what I need is a lifestyle that permits more dress and skirt-wearing.

Maya, have you tried the “Sweet & Low” from Lucky in a petite length?
Also, I’ve just started a thread on the youlookfab forum about “the denim rut” which you might be interested in.
Now, what is it about your lifestyle that stops you from wearing skirts and dresses?

I too have problems finding jeans, or pants at all, that fit me. In fact, I have one pair of khakis that fit and no jeans that fit properly. The one pair that do fit are a size 5 juniors from Kholes. My problem is that I’m so unshapely. I have no butt to speak of and very small thighs. My stomach sticks out in front, so if the pants fit everywhere else they are extremely tight in front and I have to suck in to put them on. Pants that are tight in the stomach make me feel fat. Any ideas on finding jeans that fit me? Or should I just buy them and have them altered/alter them myself?
