Screen Actors Guild Awards 2008
January 28th, 2008Last night’s Screen Actors Guild award ceremony marked the beginning of the red carpet season. Metallic dresses in silver, bronze, pewter and gold ruled the show. There was also quite a bit of black and, to my surprise, not much colour. I was pleased to see that strapless styles and half shoulder styles were in abundance, which makes a refreshing change to the “Grecian Goddess look” that’s been popular the last few years.
Overall, I wasn’t wildly excited, but three fabulous ensembles stand out:
- Javier Bardem was smooth and perfect in his tie-less tuxedo, patent shoes and swept back hair. He gets my vote for best dressed person of the night. And his acceptance speech was brilliant.
- Ruby Dee was an inspiration accepting her award at age 83. If you can look as graceful and elegant as she does at that age, you’re truly stylish.
- Cate Blanchett, who is usually among my favourites at any red carpet event, blossomed beautifully in her very pregnant body. Florals are one of the biggest trends for 2008 and who other than Cate to sport it with style.
Debra Messing, Eva Longoria and Ellen Pompeo all looked nice. A little too sparkly for my taste, but I liked the cut of their dresses. Let’s hope that the Grammys and Oscars provide a better selection of fabulous gowns.

I didn’t watch the awards, but from the pictures on E! it appears Marcia Cross looks lovely with her flowing red hair, strapless aqua gown with emerald green shoes. It also looks like Kyra Sedgwicks dress is quite hideous! Ellen Pompeo’s dress seems a little ill fitting in the chest. No?

Kate Beckinsale’s beautiful yellow dress (http://www.dlisted.com/node/22502) gets my vote for best of the evening, followed by Ellen Pompeo’s flowing metallic.

I didn’t even know the SAG awards were on! I’m so bummed I missed it, as I do enjoy a good awards show. How are they able to put on the SAG awards, but not the Golden Globes or Academy Awards? I don’t understand how this show would affect the Writer’s Guild differently from the other shows. Was it just that they didn’t write anything for the presenters to say?
Back to fashion…from the pics online I really love the dress Marion Cotillard wore. Very pretty.

Meredith,
to answer the Writer’s Guild question, it was more of a solidarity with fellow union workers issue. SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) is the on screen labor union, and they have been very supportive of the Writers strike and their fellow labor brothers. The Writers Guild gave them a pass in appreciation of all the SAG members support.
Solidarity forever, biscuitx

I never watch things like this because I really don’t care. I did look at the pictures online though. I though Viggo Mortensen looked dashing and original in his pinstripes and red. Angelina Jolie’s brown sack dress was hideous. Amanda Bynes’ dress was fun; It has to be my favorite, although I was unimpressed with the dresses in general. I love the color and silver bodice detail.
