The best of Autumn & Winter 2007

January 31st, 2008

Most of us still have a good few months of cold weather to endure, but we’ve seen the last of Autumn & Winter in store (it’s that crazy retail cycle again). Spring collections are in full swing and, as ever, I am champing at the bit to talk about them. But first, some final thoughts on the last six months of fashion.

Here are my raves (hold off on the rants… we’ll tackle them tomorrow).

  • Knee high boots were a favourite again this season. I love a pair of casual or dressy knee high boots that make a statement, and flat, funky, urban styles were in abundance.
  • Statement coats are another perennial favourite and this season we had variety of styles and colours.
  • Winter dresses were a no-brainer, easy to wear uniform with knee high boots and fun hose. Pop on a coat and you were ready to go anywhere.
  • Bright colours were a welcome change after being promised a sea of colour last Spring and being stuck with neutrals instead. Yellow, cobalt and red were personal favourites.
  • Tunics were easy and comfortable to wear.
  • Voluminous detailing in trapeze jackets, lantern sleeves, wide-legged pants, dresses and swing tops made for an interesting change if the right amount of volume was in the right place.
  • Cracked patent for handbags, shoes and belts gave an urban edge to a glossy trend.
  • Waist-cinching belts brought back the hour-glass silhouette which I love. Adding a wide belt to an existing top or sweater often kicked it up a few notches.
  • Higher rises for pants and skirts did wonders for the old muffin top.
  • Straight leg jeans were one of the mainstream silhouettes and they proved to be really versatile. Easy to tuck and streamlined enough to wear with tunics, dresses and voluminous tops.
  • Clutches remained a favourite for evenings out.
  • Fringes or Bangs were a refreshing change to the cascading 70’s locks we’ve seen for six seasons. They added a modern streamlined touch.
  • 80’s influences continued to be fun to see and wear.

Another super season. I guess I say that about every fashion season because there’s always something to like if you’re open to trying something new and you know where to look. What were your favourite trends this season?

I loved wearing knee high boots over skinny jeans. It is a very warm, practical style that kept the bottoms of my pants dry. I also think it looks quite sharp, especially when paired with a knee-length overcoat.

  2. Christie Says:

I also love this look (knee-highs over pants & with dresses). Angie, do you think this look will hang around for awhile?

  3. Sarah Says:

My favorites would have to be boots, tunics, and dresses. Boots are warm and add a chic look to skirts. I love the volume and comfort of tunics. They can look fun, flowing and elegant at the same time. It’s refreshing to see dresses be fashionable instead of something I quite wearing at age 12. I hope they stick around.

  4. Angie Says:

I suspect that these looks will stick around. They have become so mainstream. What would we do without knee high boots!

  5. Joey Says:

I was surprised I could pull off skinny pants with my pear shape. With long shirts, jackets and sweaters it worked. I’ve also recently found an adorable pair of booties. A variety of coats were fun. I also love the wide leg and high top pants–as well as the longer shirts and sweaters. Crop tops be gone! Now if we could just get more kitten heels and longer fitted jackets I’d be thrilled. :)

  6. Rayna Says:

I loved metallic accessories…they make almost any outfit fabulous.

I’m just loving the straight leg jean trend with ballet flats. Oh so cute and comfy.

  8. Wendy Says:

Shorter dresses with opaque tights, leggings or jeans!

  9. Patience Says:

I’ve been really liking tucking my skinnies into my riding boots and wearing longer more voluminous tops. Waist cinching belts and the bright colors are great too.

Tunics hands down. It made avoiding maternity clothes extremely easy. Yay!

  11. Wendy Says:

Tucking skinny jeans into boots was definitely amazing :)
Flowy tunics were great and i invested in a few yummy patent leather shoes and bags.

  12. Eva Says:

Joey, where did you find Fab Skinny’s for pretty pears? What brand are they?

I LOVE the wide belt! And I am thinking of getting bangs for my haircut on Monday. I have had that cascading 70’s locks for well over 6 seasons!

  13. Nicole Says:

I am so glad longer tops are back. Not just tunic length tops, but even regular tops seem to be carrying around a few extra inches of length. I’m thrilled that straight leg jeans did not push boot cut jeans out of the way. I also like the fact that women’s clothes are pretty and feminine again.

Wow, I really agree with you on these, too!

I just got my two statement jackets, a dark fuchsia trench and a bright yellow jacket with lantern sleeves. I always say that I can’t wear much pink or yellow, but somehow these particular shades work.

I also got two pairs of boots, one pair with flat heels in brown suede and another pair in black with high heels and lacing.

    You know I’m a dress gal ; )

I still haven’t tried crack patent, but I love the patent in general. I got patent leather shoes today in I guess you’d call it a dark, almost navy, cerulean. And I have a pair in aubergine, too.

I love the waist cinching belts. I need to wear mine more. Only problem is that so many of my tops and dresses already have stuff going on there.

    Bangs. Check!

And I love, love, love all the purrrdy colors! I bought a pair of electric blue, cork-heeled wedges last year and just wore them this year. They play well with all the other colors. And I’ve been wearing matching nail polish, as well as navy. I’m still surprised how well those colors work as nail polish.

Clutches… check, check, check, check, check… lost count. They’re the easiest way to find colorful, cute bags for cheap. They still haven’t caught on here, so they’re often on clearance. One of these days the other college students will figure out that they’re perfect to slip into a backpack. In the meantime, their loss, my gain.

  15. Angie Says:

I’m always so pleased to hear that you are a dress girl Meg! My wish is that other women enjoy dresses as much as we do. They are so easy to put together and a great dress always kicks up the old style quotient. And I’m thrilled to hear about your exciting new purchases. Enjoy!

Here’s to pretty feminine clothing and longer lengths Nicole, and you’d look fab with bangs Eva!

  16. Ruth Says:

How do you feel about tunics for 5′4″’s? I feel a little cut off in them. Short and dumpy.

  17. Meg from The Bargain Queens & All About Appearances Says:

Thanks, Angie! I am definitely hooked! Maybe it will rub off on some of my peers. I know a lot of women don’t like dresses because of past experiences, but there are so many nice, comfy options now that I really don’t understand why more women don’t wear them.

[…] 60’s fringe (or “bangs”) is back with a vengeance. This hairstyle trend started coming through last year and who better to sport it so perfectly than Reese Witherspoon at last year’s Golden Globes. […]
