Eight hour cream for dry skin

February 27th, 2008

I suffer from dry skin, especially around my nose, chin and cheek area. Winter’s harsh dry air and central heating left me feeling under-hydrated, no matter what I applied. I tried everything my esthetician suggested. I even tried good old Vaseline. I was this close to bathing in olive oil.

Then it dawned on me that my late Mum had the same problem and she used “Eight Hour Cream” from Australian cosmetic house Elizabeth Arden. I bought some and started applying it liberally to my nose, chin and cheeks twice a day with my moisturizer. Voila! The positive effect was noticeable almost immediately. I also apply the cream to my chapped lips because nothing else works.

Eight Hour Cream seems to sooth minor skin irritations and any part of your skin that is peeling and flaking. I have very sensitive skin and normally can’t put anything on my face, so I’m relieved to have found a gentle, effective and affordable solution. A tube costs $17 and lasts forever because a little goes along way. I can’t wait to tell my esthetician how clever my Mother was.

Eight Hour Cream

Dry cuticles, ashy elbows and knees, dry heels and scraped knuckles are all in a day’s work for Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. It’s fabulous.

Oooh that sounds like something I could use on my face also. New England winters do a number on my skin. Is Elizabeth Arden a product sold at counters in large department stores? I’m going to see if I can find it online too.

    Thanks Angie!

Sounds great! I’ll have to try it to. My face is super oily in the summer, but in the winter it gets unbearably dry, and my lips are always chapped.

Elizabeth Arden has a counter at Macys, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. You’ll be able to get this product on-line if you click the link. I hope that it works as well for you as it has for me!

Why not use olive oil? It’s great. Specifically, have you tried DHC Deep Cleansing Oil? It’s made from olive oil. I also suffer from seriously dry skin in the winter, using this to wash off my makeup at night and not only does it do a fabulous job removing every last speck of makeup, it gives a wonderful moisture boost. Try it, you’ll wake up in the morning with the softest, flake-free skin!

I have been living with dry, flaky patches on my face for years. It makes it very difficult to apply make-up as the flaky areas just grab onto the stuff, making them even more noticeable. I have started using Pond’s cold cream out of sheer desperation and it does very little. I am certainly going to purchase this product. Thank you very much for your post! I’m crossing my fingers! By the way, I live in Florida where we are not known for our dry air.

    Hi Angie,

Thanks for the recommendation - I live in Beijing and I was just discussing this problem with my friends here - the harsh winters in Beijing as well as the pollution wreak havoc with your skin so we are always looking for solutions to keep our skin mositurised - also what is the brand Jen mentioned (DHC) Cleansing oil?

  7. Angie Says:

Ah ha! I shall give it a bash Jen. Where do I get DHC Deep Cleansing oil?

Thanks for letting us know. I battle with my elbows all year round. I will get it today!!

  9. Jen Says:

    At www.dhc.com

Note, I do not work for the company and I’m not getting paid for this endorsement…. I’ve just become a huge fan this past winter! I got a free sample in the mail (their catalog always includes free samples), loved it, and have been loving it ever since.

Their Extra Nighttime Moisturizer is also worth it (especially if you are in your 40s, like I am). It will feel greasy - so only use it at night. By the time you wake up, it’ll have all absorbed and you’ll be glowing. While it does feel greasy initially, I have not had any breakouts. You get free samples when you order something - so give it a try too.

I tried their eye cream but didn’t like it - left me with stinging eyes. If anyone has any suggestions for eye cream, let me know.

P.s. Angie, I’ve been enjoying your blog for awhile but these are the first posts i’ve made. I’ve been overhauling my wardrobe after a weight loss and change of lifestyle. Your “flop-proof outfit” advice really saved me.

Thanks Jen. Glad to hear that I was able to help. You might like the follow up to that blog entry that I posted more recently.

I shall let you know how my skin feels after I’ve used DHC oil!

    Hi Angie,
Elizabeth Arden is owned by the Dutch/Uk firm, Unilever, and is not Australian as you mentioned. Unfortunately I do not agree with your review of Eight Hour Cream. The strong fragrance of petrol is enough to put me off this product.

  13. Angie Says:

Well Karen, you are right! I have been under the illusion that Elizabeth Arden was Australian all my life. It seemed to have been marketed that way when I grew up in Hong Kong (which is quite close to Australia). My late Mother use to use the odd Arden product and she seemed to have been under the same illusion. I contacted my biz savvy Australian friend down under a few days ago and asked him whether Arden was Auzzie. To his surprise, he recently found out that it wasn’t. He had also thought that Arden was an Australian cosmetic house. So interesting! Elizabeth Arden started off as an American company and was bought by Unilver (a Dutch Company) a little while ago. Thanks for pointing that out to us.

I may have to try that. As for your chapped lips… this isn’t fabulous, but CarMax lip balm (the tub NOT tube) is the only thing that keeps my incredibly dry lips smooth and kissable for hours!
