The bright skinny fad

March 10th, 2008

High fashion retailers in the USA are selling brightly coloured, ultra skinny jeans and my Euro sources tell me that this style is all over London, Paris and Germany too. I saw glimpses of this denim movement last season and also when I was recently in Spain. It’s a scream. I owned red, turquoise and fuchsia pairs with ankle zips 25 years ago.

Apparently the idea is to treat this silhouette more like leggings than pants this time around. So you’re supposed to wear these lurid skinnies under tunics and dresses instead of tops. Either way I’m bypassing this trend; but I’ll admit that I’m strangely attracted to the look because it’s a hilarious blast from my ‘80’s past.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this trend appeals to today’s teenyboppers and youngsters because it’s so different to most of the silhouettes they’ve been exposed to for the last two decades. I wonder what’s next. Home perm kits and crimping curlers perhaps?

My prediction: this look is a fad that’s going to disappear after one season.

You’re right! A blast from my past, too. I had bright blue ones. I wore it under my huge, long sweater with the shoulder pads. Although mine had a much higher waist than these one do.

  2. Fabulously Broke Says:

No thanks. The closest I’ve gotten to skinny pants are dark jeans in straight legs I bought by accident…..

  3. Meredith Says:

I had green Esprit pants just like these!

  4. Munequita Says:

No thanks! Yikes, I love color but not this way…it attracts attention to the wrong places if you are bottom heavy. I will definitely leave this trend for the teens.
But maybe it won’t be as bad as I am imagining it…I will wait and see how people interpret it on the streets, but I am definitely bypassing this one. It is just not me.

For most of us, or at least myself - this is a very unbecoming trend that I will stay far, far away from.

  6. San Says:

This type of thing looks really cute on very young girls. I remember the skinnie jeans of the eighties with the high waists and zipper at the ankle. I remember wearing them with a tucked in large T shirt. That’s a very hard thing to wear, specially after you eat a meal!

  7. Rachel Says:

I really *hope* it’s a fad that disappears quickly - they are so not attractive! Not attractive now, and not attractive when I wore them in grade 8 (lemon yellow and hot pink!).

  8. Hannah Michelle Says:

    Those are a little scary…

I think I’ll pass on this one. Superskinny jeans in whatever color make even the thinnest girls look and feel like a sausage in a casing. Looking like a sausage in a BRIGHTLY COLORED casing does not make things any better. And anyway at 30, I have no ambition to be the next Oscar Mayer poster girl.

  10. Nicole Says:

Ugh! No thanks. They don’t even look good on the models.

  11. Maya Says:

Somehow I find these a lot more unflattering than skinny jeans, possibly because the dark denim is more flattering and classy. The last pair aren’t so bad to me for some reason, but the rest are–and I’m probably going to give my age away here–fugly.

  12. Jenn @ Frugal Upstate Says:

I wouldn’t wear them, but agree on the comedy factor–although to get the whole effect you probably need some really BIG hair to go with :)

  13. Angie Says:

Mine were higher in the rise too Marlene.

Looks like the feeling is unanimous! Everyone is bypassing this trend. No one has commented on the “re-newed” way of wearing this item. The pictures do not show this look but it’s interesting. I don’t mind the light blue pair on the far right and can see that style working with a black tunic and black shoes on the right body type.

  14. Maya Says:

I think they would look fine with a tunic, but in that case I’d rather just go for leggings. They’re far more comfortable and it seems rather tragic to me to spend $78 on a trend that is obviously passing. I could get 7 or 8 pairs of leggings for that much!

  15. Angie Says:

Indeed. Or we could stick to our dark wash denim skinnies and wear those with tunics and dresses.

  16. Lisa Says:

Hee hee! I was a teen in the 1980’s, but I was punk so never wore these :)

  17. Angie Says:

Ha Lisa! So you wore these in black and red and black checks perhaps?

  18. Sarah Says:

I saw a 10 year old girl in some teal skinnys last night and they looked cute on her. I think I’ll bypass them though, as I still haven’t gotten myself even a dark pair of skinnys.

  19. budget babe Says:

The kids love it, as you suggested. I think this trend will be around longer than one season, at least with the bubble-gum set :)

  20. Eeii Says:

OMG!! love those colours…i got the red and green skinny jeans thought der hot ayes :)
