No VPLs: the Vanishing Edge Collection

April 22nd, 2008

A mannequin on display at Soma Intimates caught my attention last week. She was wearing super sleek underwear accompanied by the slogan “the one and only vanishing edge panty”. Curious, I went inside and found a whole slew of panties and shapewear in Soma’s “vanishing edge collection”. I promptly bought a pair of boy shorts to put them to the test.

They are fabulous. The leg openings are lined with an ultra thin layer of rubber to ensure that your undies stay put. And it really works. Ultra soft and breathable microfiber, a cotton gusset and an assortment of colours might make these knickers the answer to your thong-free days. They launder well and the rubberized finish has not irritated my sensitive skin. I’m chuffed.

The sales assistant suggested going up a size if you’re a little curvier on the derriere or thigh because panty lines can’t vanish if the rubber is too tight. I’m converted and have made use of their offer by getting 3 for $27. Here’s to no more panty lines.

I personally like the look and coverage of boy shorts, but there are many other options if that’s not your cup of tea. This collection is available online if you don’t have a Soma store nearby.

There is a Soma right near my apartment and I walk by it often. I have seen their window displays for vanishing edge panties, and wondered if they’re really as great as they advertise. You’ve answered my question! Thanks for the informative post. I think I will head over there Friday and get myself some new summer undies! :D

this comes at a perfect time. as i creep up in age i’m thinking it’s time to put away the thong underwear. I mean really, do I want to find myself at 60 still wearing them?
But i wasn’t sure what to get since i don’t want panty lines so voila, here’s the solution. thanks Angie.
ps sorry if the visual content of this message has left you with burning eyes… :)

Often with white or ivory pants, I want to wear more coverage than a thong, and even Spanx show through. I look forward to trying these Soma undies. Thanks Angie!

Good point Carolyn. The trick is to wear undies that are close to the colour of your skin when you wear white or cream pants. This way nothing will show through. I don’t wear thongs and do not have the see through problem when I wear nude coloured boy shorts with white pants. If you’re dark skinned, you’ll need a darker pair of undies. Brown works well for very dark skins.

Let me know what the verdict is Ana, and no unsightly images on my side Lisa. Hope that they work as well for you as they did for me.

I recently purchased some. (I’m in Chicago, and there’s a store in Water Tower Place). And while they do hold up the No VPL promise, I don’t love them. By the middle of the day, the rubber lining starts to stick to me uncomfortably. Not cool. I’ll keep the three pair I have, but I don’t think I’d buy more.

I bought them to wear under exercise pants for grad school in the fall (I’m going for acting, so there’s a lot of movement-based classwork). I was told they were great to exercise in, but I haven’t even tried it. If they stick uncomfortably from normal daily wear, there’s no way I’d want to work up a sweat in them.

Wow, nice! Thanks for the info, Angie…I’ll have to check these out.

  7. Antje Says:

I tried these and don’t like them, because that rubbery part rolls up when I pull up my pants. I also don’t like that you can only wash them on cold. I find them goofy and will stick with Jockey for now, returning 2 of the set of 3 to Soma.

  8. Angie Says:

That’s a shame, Antje. I’m sorry that they didn’t work out for you. Back to what I usually say : horses for courses! Hope that you find undies that you love soon.

  9. Ana Says:

I bought these on Angie’s recommendation and I think they’re great! I bought them in one of the “nude” colors in the bikini style, and I wore them today with a very thinly knit wrap dress and you couldn’t see any panty line. I was worried the rubber part would be uncomfortable, but it wasn’t at all. After the first minute or so, I didn’t even notice it any more and they really didn’t budge, so no embarrassing wedgie, either. :D I did have to buy one size larger than I wear other places, but they still fit wonderfully. I will definitely be investing in more of these.

That’s terrific, Ana. Thanks for posting your experience. I have just replenished my undies and gone with all their boy shorts. These are the best knickers I have ever owned. I do not have the “rolling problem” that Antje was talking about. I hope that you don’t either!

That’s great! I love boyshorts, but you usually can’t wear them without having a panty line…I will have to check those out!

  12. Carolyn Says:

I have purchased about 12 pair of the Vanishing Edge panties! I LOVE them!
I am ready to clear out my drawer and make room for only Vanishing Edge panties. I will not have to search for a panty that doesn’t ride up again!!
I didn’t care for the bikini style, just seemed too skimpy on me. I was surprised how much I like the boyshort style. It is perfect for pants. I also have the high leg style and am pleased.
I wear a size 4 to size 6 clothing. Chico’s sizing 0 to .5. Just throwing this in to help anyone with their sizing questions.
I sized up to a medium in the Vanishing Edge, but I wonder if I could have worn the small?? I might try the small with my next online order. I hope they never quit making these!!!!!

  13. Meg Says:

Simply stated… I took your advice. Bought 3 pairs. Love them silly. Thanks.
