Brunettes in blue

May 6th, 2008

It’s become increasingly clear that brown haired girls with blue, brown or green eyes look stunning in the right shade of blue. It’s possibly one of their best colours. I’m talking light blue, cobalt blue, French blue, ink blue, dusty blue, sea blue, teal blue, royal blue and turquoise. Any one or all of the above, so take your pick.

Are you a brunette and do you wear blue? If so, what shade of blue do you wear and how do you mix it up with other colours?

Yep, I’m a blue-eyed brunette, and one of my favorite colors is blue. I like navy blue, royal blue, and cobalt. I’ve noticed it brings out my eyes, and just generally looks really good when I wear darker blues. Blues just seem to go with almost any color, too, so I love how versital it is!

  2. Marlene Says:

I am a blue-eyed brunette and LOVE to wear blue! I feel like the sea blues, teal, royals, really make my eyes pop. And I do get lots of compliments when I wear blue. I tend to pair my blues with neutrals…khaki or black. And also with brown. And jeans, of course. When I wear with white it feels too costume-y. I don’t have any navy or ink blue in my wardrobe but I have been considering these colors lately as a way to extend my blue “theme”.

My eyes are a strange color…they tend to change shades depending on what I am wearing. So I can have eyes that vary anywhere from a slate gray to teal. So it’s actually fun to play with the variances.

As I have gotten older, my brown hair has faded so I do tend to keep it colored to maintain the darker shade since this makes my eyes appear bluer. And my new eye glasses are plum colored….which also enhances my eye color.

I’m a brown-eyed brunette, with natural reddish highlights in my hair. Does your recommendation still hold?? I can see wearing blue if you’re a blue-eyed brunette or a brunette with blueish highlights or undertones in your brown hair. Blue would look stunning. I’m just not quite that dark brown. What shade of blue is going to look best with my hair??

  4. The Lingerie Diva Says:

Yes, I am a blue-eyed brunette (I dye it) and I love wearing blue shirts, particularly bright aqua colored. I stay away from dark navy blue, because I also have very pale skin, and that doesn’t help!

  5. Jennifer Says:

What is your point of view on women with auburn hair and brown eyes wearing blue? Does it still work? It is not a color a gravitate toward - I currently only have one navy sweater.

  6. Patience Says:

Blue is probably my favorite color. I’m brunette with green eyes. I like navy, cobalt and teal. I’ve gotten away from paler shades over the past year for some reason. I like combining them with white and other bold colors. The only thing about blue is pairing it with blue denim; I always need something to break it up so I’m not just all blue.

  7. Angela Says:

I’m a brown-eyed brunette, and I do indeed look great in blues (especially greeny blues). I also look good in yellowy-greens and burgundy/maroon shades.

  8. Angie Says:

It’s great to hear this from real brunettes! Thanks for sharing your blue choices with us.

I hope that we can convince you to pair blue with white bottoms Marlene. That’s a stylish no-brainer. And I love the sound of those plum specs.

Jennifer, as a brunette who tends towards a red head, you wear dusty blues and dark ink blue well (that’s darker than navy). You tend to look better in muddy or “antique” colours as opposed to primary brights. Hope that makes sense.

I adore the sound of how you’re combining blue, Patience. White jeans/pants are a must for your wardrobe and adding a bright accessory is good way of breaking up all the blues when you wear blue denim.

    I can’t believe I didn’t say this before… *in a daze*

My best color is purple! Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I’m pale, have dark brown hair, and brown eyes? I don’t know. But I look good in pretty much all shades of it. I never get more compliments than when I’m wearing purple.

I don’t know if I’m really considered a brunette since I have black hair, but I avoided all cool colors for years thinking they weren’t going to be flattering on me the same way that warmer hues were. It had to do more with the tone and intensity. Now I love wearing darker and brighter shades of blue. I’m in love with ink blue but I don’t have it incorporated into my wardrobe yet, unfortunately, but I think it would look great. I have a medium-dark olive skin color so I wear black well, but since black can be kind of boring the idea of ink blue really appeals to me.

Turquoise is one of my favorite colors and is starting to have a bigger influence in my closet, especially because it looks so great with my other favorite color (red). I absolutely can’t wear powdery, pastel shades of blue or any other color. The tend to either reflect off my skin in a way that makes me look sick.

  11. Ana Ortiz Says:

My hair and skin tones are just like the girl in the far right of the pictures and I gravitate to black, thanks for this tip. I will embrace it and go shopping this evening!

  12. Sarah Says:

I’m a pale brunette with green eyes and blue is one of my favorite colors. I love it in just about any shade. I do tend to avoid some varieties of baby blue, but look good in other baby blues, not sure why. Recently I’ve discovered that I love turquoise… or teal; I’m not sure what the difference is. I used to have a lot of navy in my wardrobe, but now I think it may be too dark for my skin. I still wear navy and ink blue skirts though. I tend to pair blues with khaki or black. I’d love them with white too, but I’ve never had any white skirts or pants. That’s something I need to fix. (Other favorite colors are red and green, especially olive green that matches my eyes.)

  13. Bethany Says:

I have blue eyes, pale skin with lots of freckles, and very dark brown hair. I have always loved wearing all shades of blue, though I think cobalt-to-darker blues look best on me. When I wear those shades, I get compliments. Blue goes with everything, including other shades of blue, so I love it. My favorite is to pair it with a bright white though. How can you go wrong with white jeans or a white skirt and a royal blue or teal top? =o)

  14. NancyF Says:

I have brown hair (now with some gray), dark-brown eyes, and medium-olive skin that tans easily. Years ago I had my colors “done” and was told that many shades of blue worked for me, from teal to midnight. Nevertheless, I never felt comfortable wearing any of them (except, of course, for denim on my bottom half). They all made me feel … well, blue. My wardrobe consisted almost exclusively of browns, olive greens, the darker oranges, and accents of deep red. Recently, though, I modified my hair color from blonde highlights to mostly brunette lowlights, and I’m now looking at blues from a new perspective. I recently bought a fantastic deep-indigo jacket in an unusual, sophisticated cut that I’m hoping will become a new staple. And I’m finding I do well with some shades of turquoise. I have to be careful to keep the shades on the “muddy” side–no jewel tones, pastels, or bright primaries for me. I can’t see ever wearing royal or cobalt blue.

  15. Lisa Says:

I’m a brunette with eggplant undertones. I wear blue constantly. I enjoy all the various shades of it, but I particularly love a cobalt blue. I also love a turquoise. The jewel-toned colors look wonderful on me. I have very blue eyes too so another bonus :)

  16. anka Says:

You are so right about blue. I have black/brown hair (natural) and light green eyes, pale skin and freckles. Navy is my go to colour.

  17. Nicole Says:

I’m naturally brunette w/brown eyes. I highlight my hair with various shades of red and medium blonde. I love blue. I lean towards lighter shades, not quite powder or pastel, but bright baby blue to teal.

  18. Meg from All About Appearances and The Bargain Queens Says:

I’m a green-eyed brunette and I love bright, medium blues, especially shades around turquoise or teal.

  19. cathy Says:

Well, I *was* a brunette, but have recently gone lighter, feeling it is the right choice for me at this point. I was thinking the same thing about orange earlier today– I think it is also a brunette type color. I have a cobalt blue top and will probably still wear it.

  20. Caitlin Says:

I’m a blue-eyed brunette and lately, I’ve found myself wearing blue probably four days out of seven. I love it. My favorite shade is a kinda muted grey-blue because it matches my eyes. Ink blue is my other favorite blue. I’m crazy about it.

  21. Karen Says:

I agree that blue looks great on brunettes, so what about blondes?

  22. joelle Says:

I have brown eyes, almost black hair, and very pale skin and I do love to wear all shades of blue, blue-gray, and blue-green! However, judging from what I hear other people say, I seem to look especially good in a very particular shade of dark, saturated teal. I have only one item, a cardigan, in this color and I have gotten compliments from friends and strangers almost every single time I have worn it. Needless to say, I am on the lookout for more tops, dresses, or scarves in this color, preferably in lighter fabrics since my cardigan is wool and is too hot for summer. I almost didn’t buy that cardigan because I had many others already in my closet but it was on sale and the unusual color was interesting to me. Turned out to be one of the best clothing purchases I ever made!

  23. Babe Says:

I’m in the same boat as Nancy F, dark brown eyes and hair, olive skin. Although I never “had my colors done,” I have always based my wardrobe color choices on warm, muddy colors. I learned this approach in the 80’s fashion bible Color Me Beautiful, and it has worked amazingly well for me, even though my daughter says, “It’s so last century, Mom!” Pastels wash me out. Blacks and purples are death. Jewel tones look like someone else’s clothing on me. The blues that work for me are turquoise, teal, and, surprisingly, royal blue. I won’t wear a navy or powder blue. I look at my blues as neutrals, and wear them with most of my other favorite colors – cream, caramel, chocolate, avocado, pumpkin, tangerine, and paprika. Sounds like a recipe, doesn’t it?

  24. Tara Says:

This is so interesting! I am a pale skinned dark brunette with green/hazel eyes and I have always avoided blue because I thought it didn’t work with my eyes. However, I recently tried some blues and now I find I’m loving blue! I can wear navy, and most darker to mid-tone blues.

I’m still trying to figure out what to pair my blue tops with. Gray? Brown? I’m not great at color coordinating to begin with, so this has been a challenge. I usually save my blue tops for my jeans, but then I have the big question - what color shoes?

  26. TR Says:

Hmmm… it’s been so long since I’ve worn anything blue (due to a traumatic experience in high school when I realized EVERYTHING in my closet was navy blue! I still don’t know how it happened.)
Maybe I will try to integrate it back into my wardrobe! Carefully monitored though! Lest those blue monsters procreate!
