Summer mixer: orange and raspberry

June 17th, 2008

I spent time at Ann Taylor and the Loft last week because of their “30% off everything friends and family promotion”. These stores are running both hot and cold colour palettes at the moment. Hues are rich and saturated.

Ann Taylor makes an impeccable product that’s perfect for the modern-classic. But the modern-classic needn’t stick to the colour discipline that a store provides. Mixing and matching items to suit your own style is key. This is precisely what happened with my client when we combined a burnt orange dress with a rich raspberry cardigan, gold and burgundy accessories, brown patent sandals and a straw handbag with dark bamboo handle. The result was simply delicious.

We continued to match the raspberry cardigan with a burnt orange sleeveless silk blouse, white pants and pearls. We then paired the same burnt orange silk blouse with blue jeans, white jacket and burgundy beads. The brown patent sandals and straw handbag remained constant and the burgundy jewelry reflected a raspberry glow in a certain light. Dynamite does come in small packages as my petite client felt explosively tall in her new colour combination.

The Ann Taylor items we used to put together the outfits described above, shown with similar accessories. A metallic go-to Summer wedge would work equally well. You don’t need to go to Ann Taylor to put this colour combination together - it might be lurking in your closet.

    Wow. Beautiful and unexpected.

  4. Julia Says:

Delicious! Thanks for the ideas of using white with bright colors, it inspired me to combine my many blue/aqua tops and white pants with my blue/green accessories. My silver shoes and white bags should go well with them.

i lvoe the colors but the loft has really gone down hill.

  7. Tanya Says:

The colors are pretty indeed, but not for me. I look terrible in any shade of orange.

  8. Sara Says:

I love Ann Taylor’s new colors!! I used one of their blue dresses for my graduation dress a few weeks ago. It was the only store I found something I liked, and looked amazing, on.

  9. Phoebe Says:

I have the gold wedges - I love them! They’re very comfortable and have a small wedge, so they almost look like a flat, but with a little lift. Perfect!

I love this color combo and that necklace is incredible. I’m drooling.

I just absoluely LOVE LOVE LOVE that color combination!!!! A few years ago I bought a silk sheath dress from Talbots where the main dress was raspberry, the bodice was orange sherbet and a small strip of lime divided the two colors. It was absolutely gorgeous!!!!! Now all I have to do is lose about 10 pounds to fit into it again.

  12. Sarah Says:

Lovely color combo. Like Tanya, I can’t usually do orange. I have found that I can wear one specific shade of orange that tends toward red. Even then it’s probably not my best color. I adore the necklace, but I’ll pass on it at that price. I still need too many basics.

What a pro you are! The combinations you describe are only something someone with your talent could create.

I’ve been bored with Anne Taylor–but I check back occasionally.

What in the devil has happened to Express? Used to be a great standby for pants and shirts. Now it seems there stuff is cheaply made and kind of going through a Gap-type down turn or struggle.

  14. Angie Says:

I hear you, Joey. Express looks absolutely dreadful this season and Gap continues to be a sad, sad story.

Let us know how you fare at AT! This colour combo would look fab on you.

  15. Cathy Says:

Express not only looks bad it smells bad too. Has anyone else noticed the strange A&F type cologne that they are apparently spraying throughout the store? I too bought my basics there years ago but no more. The thought of not being able to wander in and look at the sales racks in the back anymore is very sad. But anyway, hot pink and orange, great colors, wish they had showed up in more stores.
