Hints of Autumn 2008

June 25th, 2008

Wear your colourful Summer pieces while you can because we’re heading for a very grey and black Autumn collection. A neutral palette rules.

We’re going to see:

  • Sculptured silhouettes and sleek profiles
  • Loads of black lace
  • Fiery crimson, orange and eggplant amidst the fog of grey
  • Rich hippie styles
  • Biker jackets, ruffles and skinny pants
  • Tailored peplum jackets
  • Bowed blouses
  • Checkered tweeds and Winter florals
  • Animal accents and feathered accessories
  • Over-the-knee boots, calf-high boots, booties and spiked, soaring heel heights
  • Waist-cinching skinny belts and statement scarves
  • Necklace upon necklace upon necklace

You can count on patent and hopefully the demise of wide-legged pants. If I’m not mistaken the “it” shoe for Autumn is the black platform pump. Your thoughts?

Yay! Those purchases that I have already made for Fall are right on! Sounds French; especially the skinnies, scarves and black pumps.

  2. Joy Says:

Overall I like the forecast but will say no to feathers and spiked high heeled footwear. I’d like to see examples of the peplem jacket, how it should fit and what to wear with it. I’ll probably avoid the hippy style too but would like to see examples.

  3. Tanya Says:

Angie, thank you so much for this article! This sounds so exciting!

I am very happy about the return of the sleek & tailored silhouettes and moving away from the volume trend! Also about greys & purples, grey is my favorite neutral and purple one of my favorite colors! I really like most of the stuff above: biker jackets, ruffles, tailored peplum jackets, bowed blouses, checkered tweeds, animal accents, boots, belts, scarves and necklaces!

This is so good that I think that I shall allow myself a time-out from my shopping ban for the Nordies sale, since it will be for fall clothing!

About the black platform shoe, is it still rounded-toes? Or are we moving away from those?

I just can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming fall ! Fall is my favorite shopping season!

  4. Sarah Says:

I like the idea of sculptured silhouettes. So tired of all the waistless volume tops and dresses. They make me look pregnant. Black lace sounds gorgeous to me, very Victorian. I’ll do crimson, but orange looks awful on me and eggplant is usually too dark for my fair skin. Black and grey look great with colored accessories. I like some hippy styles; not sure what will be showing up in stores. The biker jackets, ruffles, and skinnies have me excited, as do the bows. Tailored jackets will be a nice change from all of the swing jackets. And of course I love boots and scarves. I’m also loving the idea of black platform pumps. I can’t wait for the fall collections to arrive.

am I imagining things, or does this sound like everthing Christian did on last season of Project Runway?

  6. Rosie Says:

I’m in the process of moving and getting rid of lots of clothes. Your posts yesterday and today have me thinking that I might just get rid of everything I don’t absolutely love that doesn’t fit in with the next couple seasons! It sounds terrifying yet freeing at the same time!

I love gray, black lace, bows and tailoring. I’m excited about the colors you mentioned to make the neutrals pop! Skinnies don’t seem to be going away, huh? As a curvy 5′4″ size 16 or so, I am still so hesitant to try them out!

I’m also a day late is saying how much I loved yesterday’s list - I’m ready to go shopping!!

  7. Julia Says:

Thanks Angie for the list! I should keep my eyes open for some of those items when I’m in Hong Kong, maybe I can pick up some black laced blouses and statement scarfs there.

  8. shiny Says:

Yes, it does sound like Christian!

The color scheme sounds good to me; eggplant is one of my fav colors. Intrigued by the biker jacket idea. I have grown to love ruffles, but not sure about bows and lace. I finally found my skinny jeans so I’m all set there! And tailored peplum jackets sound lovely to me…. but soaring heel heights, forget it.

Winter florals…. wondering about that one… can’t picture!

Sounds like there will be something for everyone. That is what I like best about fashion in recent years. It’s less about wearing the “In” thing - whether it suits you or not - and more about having multiple In things so everyone can find a trend that suits them.

  9. Rosie Says:

Dana, you are right! Shiny, there does always seem to be something for everyone - it’s great!

  10. punkANDLEATHER Says:

OHH Awesome, can´t wait!!! everything sound perfect except for the ¨rich hippie style¨which I personally dislike it, but overall, sound great!!!

  11. Ana Says:

I knew this colorless time was coming. :(

Crimson and orange I can do (orange is my favorite color) but eggplant is a horrible color on me.

  12. Amy Says:

Thank goodness the wide-legged trouser is leaving us!! I’m not tall enough to pull that off. I’m in love with the crimson and eggplant trend (there hasn’t been nearly enough red in the stores for my liking!), and I’m a serious scarf addict, so these are good things!

I can do without the soaring high heels, though. They’re beautiful to look at, but I’m running all over my office building all day long. They’re just not doable. I’d love to see some really cute heels in the 2.5-inch range. Just because I don’t want to trip down the stairs at my office doesn’t mean I want to wear boring shoes!

But as long as the autumn tops don’t look like maternity wear, I’ll be thrilled! I’m so sick of this empire-waisted, blousey business! I like an empire waist when it’s cut fairly close below. But all this billowy, long stuff is SO unflattering on most women.

  13. Antje Says:

What a great preview! Lots to look forward to, including tailoring, biker jackets, ruffles, skinnies (as long as they are still worn with longer tops), bowed blouses (cool!), animal print accents, scarves, and checkered tweed. I’m also interested in the calf high boots; I’ve had some a few years ago and LOVED them.

I don’t know what a peplum jacket is, can you describe it?

And I sure don’t look forward to orange and eggplant, absolutely not good colors for me. I can already see AT and ATL being all-over orange and eggplant for months… (I find them to be the worst offenders in the limited color palette offerings at retail. It’s great if their colors work for you -e.g. this spring they do work for me- but you’re out of luck if they don’t…)

  14. Sal Says:

Hooray! So many things to look forward to. Layered necklaces, sleek styles, and animal accents - all will be fun to play with. And statement scarves are my specialty.

Am I the only one mourning the potential loss of widelegs? Not that I’ll give mine up, even if they DO fall out of favor.

  15. Joelle Says:

Angie, thank you so much for the preview! I bought a black lace top several weeks ago and was going to get this beautiful deep orange camisole top just last weekend, only they didn’t have any more in medium. So it looks like I’m on track for fall. I’ve never had a peplum jacket, but it’s something I’d like to try. I was reading the Trinny and Susannah website yesterday and they suggest peplum jackets for people who don’t have much of a waist (me!).

  16. Joelle Says:

One question: What are winter florals? Are they florals in neutral colors, or florals that don’t feature leaves?

  17. Nicole Says:

Wow! I’m impressed with everyone’s excitement!

Personally, I’m rather frightened. I hate lace, I don’t like hippie clothes, and feathers?? WTH?? FEATHERS??? I’m not a bow kind of girl, I don’t wear belts well, and I love wide legged trousers!

I like the colors, but I don’t think of colors as being in or out of fashion. People should wear what looks good on them, and it seems like there is always some color options out there these days. I like the idea of over the knee boots, but not sure I’d actually wear them (maybe…I would, just not sure where!), and I could get into a biker jacket–but it would have to be classy looking.

I dunno…I’ll have to see what it looks like. I’m not usually such a nay-sayer–so I find this disheartening. I’m still trying to figure out feathers…all I can picture are those gawd-awful roach clip things girls put in the hair in the 70’s. OMG, you guys will have to duct tape to the walls if people start wearing feathers in their hair!

  18. anka Says:

Hi Angie, any tips on layering or wearing multiple necklaces? What is the best way to make this look work?

  19. Lisa Says:

I’d like to see the demise of the maxi dress, along with empire waist dresses and tops, big-legged pants, and leggings :D

  20. Angie Says:

I’m impressed with those who have made a good start to their Autumn shopping list. Well done!

Tanya, I’m with you. Autumn is my favourite shopping season and I can scarcely contain myself when the goods appear in store. Boots, jackets, hose and coats are right up my alley. Simply divine.

The voluminous trend is here to stay. Sculptured silhouettes ARE voluminous. But they’ll stand alongside sleek profiles. There’s hopefully something for everyone. I adore the voluminous trend when the piece is right. It’s arty-farty and retro. I’m counting on great voluminous pieces for Autumn.

I’m not into the multitudes of empire cut tops we’re seeing at the moment. Offering a wide variety is great, but there’s just TOO much empire cut top business going on. And I don’t own a single style. Not enough choice! ( You’re getting a rant early).

I’m weary of wide-legged pants, and they’re harder to wear than you might expect. But I have to say that Nicole wears them well and I hope that she manages to find as many as she needs.

I’m excited about the Autumn preview. Bowed blouses, ruffles, skinnies, scarves and animal accents are very appealing. I choose to bypass anything hippy and boho, but have friends and clients that look terrific in the look.

As for biker jackets, they have been a staple in my wardrobe since the ‘80’s. I have continually updated this look when necessary and will always wear one. Matched with a chunky strand of pearls, a girly blouse or crisp ruffled shirt, jeans and heels, I’m set. It’s probably one of my favourite looks of all time.

Ladies who have asked questions about peplum jackets and layered necklaces, I’m keeping you in suspense!

  21. Yvonne Says:

Fall shopping is fun and exciting! Grey doesn’t look good on me especially around my face. But I do like crimson. Can you give some advice on scarves–I think they are neat but don’t know how to pull the look off. Thanks for the fall preview Angie!

  22. Nicole Says:

Hey Angie–could we see some examples of updated biker jackets too? Thanks!

  23. Jenn @ Frugal Upstate Says:

When you say bowed blouses, I hope you don’t mean with those big floppy bows a’la 1980’s style. Ick. I think I was scarred for life with those. . .

  24. Basia Says:

    Ladies,
Don’t worry about the colors! After surviving the first winter in the European fashion capita,l as for which they proudly call Milan, I have to tell you: every color is better than black, black and…..black. Try to imagine: rainy and foggy city full of fast running people from head to toe in black! One day, the boss of my husband did a nice sort of welcoming gesture and invited me for lunch with their department:You should have seen them chocking over their pasta when I took the coat of and presented my fuchsia jacket over the red top…..;-)
Also, may I join Antje in question: what on earth is a peplum jacket??
