Yummie Tummie beats the bulge

July 16th, 2008

Heidi Klum presented this product on the Oprah show recently and to quote Oprah herself : “no more muffin tops”.

The Yummie Tummie is a body contouring camisole that discretely slims the midsection. It’s better than a conventional camisole because of a stretchy stiff spandex panel across the midriff. Unlike conventional shapewear, this item is not supposed to be hidden. It acts as a visible layering piece under a jacket, top or dress. But there’s nothing stopping you from covering it up. It’s available in a variety of styles, sizes and lengths in most department stores and online. It’s versatility is key, but you pay for it at $62 apiece.

I haven’t personally fitted one on, but have seen it’s positive effects first hand with my clients. It works and is worth a try if you’re prepared to wear shapewear.

I suggest shapewear to my clients as a last resort. We first try to find clothing that flatters without shapewear, because that’s the more comfortable option and one less item to think about. But I do have clients who are happy wearing shapewear daily and it does make a visual difference.

I too would rather find clothing that is flattering without shapewear. Where I live it’s so hot most of the year, I really don’t want anything restrictive on, especially around my stomach.

I think this is an interesting idea, but for the price, I’d rather get some high waisted spanx or something similar to wear under multiple items.

  2. redhead Says:

I agree with Ana regarding the price and I wonder exactly how much of a muffing top it will disguise. Question for you, Angie: Why does the company not use models who actually have muffin tops to showcase the effectiveness of the product? The girls in the photos need shapewear about as much as I need a chocolate muffin. (Actually, I do need a chocolate muffin–it’s going to be a busy day at work… :) )

  3. Niecey Says:

A chocolate muffin sounds good redhead. . . . . I’ll meet you in the breakroom around 10 ish …… lol I agree with Ana, they do look very hot and yes…… why don’t they model them on “real sized” women? Thanks for all the articles Angie. . . I look forward to them every day and enjoy them immensely!!!!

  4. Nicole Says:

Hmmm I think they look comfy and supportive. I wouldn’t want to wear them in the dead of summer when it’s 90+ degrees out. But as a layering piece when you would typically wear a cami anyway, I think they would be idea. Personally, I like the feeling of having something pulling me in…I find it keeps my posture in check and keeps my back from hurting by the end of the day. I also don’t think $62 is a riduculous amount of money for something like that. Of course, I think $200 for a pair of jeans is crazy…so I may have a different perspective on how much different things are worth to me.

  5. Fran Says:

Am I the only one who notices that the “supportive” part of the tops is clearly visible? How can these be made to be worn as tops? Why don’t they just print “I’m wearing a girdle” on the outside of these tops?

  6. Wendy Says:

i notice it too, Fran! i think this is a great idea, but has room for improvment.

  7. Nicole Says:

Fran, they are meant to be worn as a layering piece.

  8. Angie Says:

Good point, redhead. I tried to find a more authentic and convincing picture of this product on a body, but no luck. The official site isn’t much better. Hope you’re having that muffin.

Ana, shapewear is hot to wear. You definitely need air-conditioning or a Seattle climate to wear this item in the Summer time.

Fran, the supportive part IS visible, but that’s fine. It’s like a top with visual surface interest. They look better than what you see in the picture. A nice product if you’re willing to invest.

    hi angie,

just recently i tried one of these on. typical of shapewear (which i don’t wear) my belly looked like a piece of sausage, which was not flattering. i guess shapewear primarily gives the wearer extra security, because usually i can tell when someone is wearing it. it looks obvious - squished, smushed, etc.

also the tank i tried was really long, several inches below my bottom and i am almost 5ft 6in. so i thought it was designed to be worn under a tunic, which are often looser these days in cut anyway.

  10. redhead Says:

LOL! Very funny Fran! I did not notice the supportive part, thought they could be worn alone too.

  11. Marlene Says:

A a person that recently developed a “muffin” I am suddenly very interested in this concept. I have noticed that my tummy lump is starting to show under clothes and I am going to need to address the issue. I just wish these were not $62!!! I have tried on shapewear occasionally and I do feel rather sausage-like! Am I trying on too small or are we SUPPOSED to feel and look like sausages? Don’t even get me started on how unhappy I am with the uni-bum look that hip shapers produce!

  12. San Says:

Uni-bum was exactly what I was going to mention. I didn’t know for sure if there was such a term, but when I tried on Spanx new boy shorts yesterday I felt like I had a uni-bum. Not attractive. I was hoping they would just have a no panty line effect, not uni bum.
Dear Spanx, You could have a good product here if you put a bit of shaping in the bum area to avoid the wearer looking like a sausage. The spanx pants only seem to work under skirts, and who needs that?

  13. Angie Says:

Thanks for the excitement Niecey (*smiling*)

Fran, I’d stick to keeping this item layered, or covered. A strappy camisole such as this one looks like underwear unless you’re a teenybopper.

Carissa, there are two lengths. Perhaps you needed the shorter length and a larger size? The key to shapewear is to buy the right size in the right product. You don’t want them to be overly tight as this actually creates another type of muffin top. Hope that helps, Marlene.

    San, you don’t need shapewear!

  14. pamphyila Says:

I wear shapewear in a pinch (ha!) but doesn’t wearing it all the time restrict circulation thereby making cellulite WORSE? If I am round, I would rather not be bumpy, too.

  15. Sal Says:

I, too, am annoyed that they used miniscule models to show off this product … and yet, I’m simultaneously intrigued. I can’t imagine it being effective for anything but the most minor case of muffintop. But if you’ve got a pair of pants that is just slightly too snug, it might be just the thing.

  16. Rosie Says:

Great in theory, but it looks like these “shapers” were made for people hardly bigger than the models they show! (OK, well, a little bigger, but…) I checked out the size chart on the website:
    http://my.yummietummie.com/size-chart.html

An XL (16) has the following measurements: 39″ chest, 31″ waist, 42″ hips. This can’t be the measurement of the actual woman trying to fit into this, right? Angie, please tell me that this is the size of the garment that will presumably stretch??!

  17. Angie Says:

It’s optimistic to assume that any shapewear takes away all lumps and bumps. It smoothes out a silhouette and generally IMPROVES muffin–top. It can’t hope to take muffin-top away completely. Of course it depends entirely on how much muffin top there is. My opinion is still the same. I’ve seen the yummie-tummie first had and it works rather well.

  18. Angie Says:

Yes Rosie, the garment will stretch!

  19. Rosie Says:

Phew. :) I think I might order one of the camis, as I use them as layering pieces a lot! They are expensive, but the cost per wear probably ends up very low! It is almost like buying a good bra.

  20. carissa Says:

angie you are right, i must have tried on the long one, but i didn’t see that demarcated on the tag anywhere.

rosie is right, i am a 12-14, but i tried on the XL and it was snug. i couldn’t wear it as a layering piece because it didn’t fit my bust, nor cover my bra.

and i don’t think $62 is cost prohibitive, esp. when considering price per wear ratio. i think it would earn its keep.

  21. Angie Says:

I like the way you think Rosie and Carissa. It IS like buying a bra that you don’t wear every day.

  22. Joelle Says:

Since muffin tops tend to be caused by pants that have too low of a rise, it makes more sense to me just to stick with higher rise pants. That would look much more flattering and is probably more comfortable than wearing Yummie Tummie. I once tried wearing a shapewear camisole 2 years ago under a dress and it tended to roll up from the hem. I had to duck into the bathroom every few minutes to pull the thing down because you could see the roll under the fabric of the dress. Seems like a shapewear bodysuit would be the only way to solve that problem

  23. JunaD Says:

They look okay on these models, but they sound like they might be uncomfortable and pricey. I wonder if it’s better to just wear a big t-shirt. T-shirts are comfortable and cheap.

  24. Linda Says:

I suppose no one is looking at this post anymore, but I found these half price at a shop that was going out of business and am wearing one today! I have little tolerance for Spanx or similar and can report that it is VERY comfortable. It might be uncomfortably warm in summer weather, but it doesn’t feel constricting at all, yet it does have a distinct smoothing effect under the otherwise unadvisably thin-knit sweater I have on. (I don’t have a protruding stomach but am rather soft and fleshy!) What I like about it is that the miracle fabric is replaced by ordinary material in the bust area, so it doesn’t mash my boobs down like all other “slimming” camisoles I have tried. It is also less inclined to ride up than an ordinary camisole and has already made a few slightly too short sweaters wearable again. Thumbs up!
