Fabulous washed-wool scarves from J. Crew
September 25th, 2008J. Crew is offering an assortment of wonderful washed-wool scarves and the picture below does not do them justice. Solid colours, ombre, or polka dots for $49 to $59. There are at least 20 different options to select from in stores at the moment and it’s well worth a look. Don’t let the uninspiring picture and lack of online choices put you off.
I have a wool allergy that makes me come out in a bad rash when I wear it close to my skin. But I’m willing to try items with a wool composition on the off chance that I can comfortably sport the item without breaking out in hives. I own a few wool pashminas that do not itch and this has given me hope.
I loved these scarves when I saw them in J. Crew and promptly tested one in store. I walked around looking at their merchandise for 10 minutes with the scarf Euro-looped around my neck. No hives, no fuss and best of all, a subtle fringe that I won’t need to remove. I was sold.
The scarves are very lightweight and come with a swing ticket that suggests three ways of tying them: “choker style”, “simple ascot” and “hacking knot”. Nice one J. Crew. If it isn’t too cold in your neck of the woods, wait a while and score this little gem when it goes on sale.
I saw green, coral, yellow, raspberry, turquoise, cream and black solid colours. There were blue, green, taupe, pink, grey and yellow ombre versions, and black, cherry, yellow and orange solids with cream polka dots. I came home with the black and cream polka dot and the client I was with bought the green one.

I was attracted to these in store, but I found them not to be very soft. Well, it’s still hot here so we’ll see when they go on sale.

Lovely! I can hardly wait to see all of those colors, but I will wait for the sale to look at them since our weather here as been the same every day for a while, low 60s in the mornings and mid 80s the rest of the day. It looks like summer is sticking around here for a while.

Thanks for mentioning your wool allergy. I too get a rash/hives with wool close to the skin [and very itchy with all things cashmere] and folks think I’m being dramatic.

Does anyone know how long J.crew’s sale’s cycle is? I remember Angie saying that Gap/BR had a 6 week cycle. Is J.Crew’s similar?

I’m not sure, Taffy. JCrew’s retail strategy changes every year. Perhaps Ana will chime in.
Patience, these scarves are definitely not as soft as cashmere, but I’ve found that they do the trick.
Kristers, I’m glad to hear I’m not alone wrt my wool allergy. I don’t come across many people who suffer like we do. Antje does as well, and that’s the sum total of people I know who battle wear wool. It’s us against wool!

Some parts of my body like my back and back of my neck are sensitive to wool, so I avoid wool scarves and sweaters that I would wear next to my skin.
I’ll have to check these scarves since you can wear them. The polka-dots sound like fun!

You’re certainly not alone Angie. My dad suffers from wool allergies too. I do to some degree, but not all wool bothers me.

The colors in that scarf in the photo are just lovely. $49 is quite expensive for a scarf, but I will definitely check J Crew out next time they have a sale.
I sympathize with the allergy sufferers. I can wear wool most of the time with no problem, but occasionally get a rash, even if it’s an item I have worn many times before in perfect comfort. I’m not sure why that is.
