Suz, Nordies house brands tend to run bigger or TTS. Not noticed much difference. Will be interesting to see how the house brands land at the NAS!

Oh I didn’t mention this earlier, but my favorite brands for yoga and workout gear for adult women of a certain age:
Gap! They’ve changed the fabric of the leggings recently so I can’t speak to the newer version (Smooth), but I love the Power leggings and if they’ve been discontinued I’ll be upset. I also like the Breathe t-shirts in long and short sleeve.
Calia - I think this line is exclusive to Dick’s Sporting Goods. Cute stuff, very wearable. I like the Renew short sleeve tee. https://www.dickssportinggoods.....wtxxxxxapt
I’m not crazy about Athleta yoga wear - the leggings waistbands tend to roll down. I do like some of the other pants styles.
Old Navy - their sweatshirts and joggers are fine. I don’t think the yoga gear is great quality.
I admit, though, that I don’t like to spend a lot on this stuff.

Thanks for these great and instructive replies, everyone. Angie, that is so interesting about your experience in the stores. Invaluable, really! You get to see real people try things on and notice the shifts because you go into the same stores on a frequent basis. Have you also noticed a difference at Nordstrom, either witih house brands or the higher end merch?

What a shame about those Effortless pants. I think at Aritzia, you have to try it on for sure, because not just size but also fabrication quality varies between different colourways.

Dee, yes, if I lived in Montreal, I'd be shopping much more by brick and mortar. We have fewer options here -- not none, but fewer. (Of the box stores I mentioned, none exist in Victoria except the Gap.) You are also right about the quality -- it has been more variable than usual in my experience this year.

whidbeygirl -- re Levis -- yes! I tried on multiple styles of jeans there on a recent shop in Seattle, and they were all very different measurements. I am not sure that's a surprise, since they are all meant to fit a little differently. But it makes it harder to figure out one's size and the whole experience can feel frustrating.

Sharan, thanks. A bit like your silver shoe experience in Seattle -- the sizing is just that leeetle bit off, making it a no go....

Thanks, Robin. And it is true, elastic waists have made fits easier in some respects.

kkards, thanks so much for your invaluable perspective here. Really good points! It hasn't dawned on me that we'd already be seeing the fallout from tariffs on the manufacturing end. And I had not thought about point 2 but you are sooooo right, and that echoes Angie's point about Gen Z liking fits both baggy and super snug....I guess it is a late 90s/ early 00s throwback. But those of us who like a more generous tailored fit and/or a more moderate oversized fit might be out of luck.

Lisa, yes, if you are shopping online you have to be extra careful about final sale and return windows. I'm assiduous with this and don't really mind the whole returns process -- it is pretty easy here on the whole (except sometimes we have to pay for returns) -- but I also tend to order online from retailers who have worked well for me in the past. That's why this year has been such a surprise. I usually do much better.

To Sal's point -- footwear tends to be more consistent in the sizing (though not always) but alas, we can't always judge comfort, even if the size is right!

Jenni, I'd shop a lot more by bricks and mortar if I could! But none of the stores I wrote about has a location in Victoria any more, except for The Gap. And we don't. have a big department store, either.

What we do have: a (smallish) Aritzia . A (new!) Uniglo (which I just discovered this week). A Talbots (generally not my style, though I can get the occasional good thing there.) A GAP. There is a Lululemon (but I don't shop there) and some great gear stores and a few small boutiques. But they typically won't have my size, or else they'll have mostly black items, or styles I don't care for -- either overly bohemian, casual, or "arty" for my personal taste.

Shopping in Vancouver is better, but I rarely get an opportunity to do that. I am lucky that I am so used to online shopping now that the returns process does not bother me. It's fairly straightforward and I'm organized about it. I try on and make my decisions usually on the same day, but always within a week. I'm lucky I can do this, because otherwise, I wouldn't have anything at all to wear!

ANGIE the hem is wavy because it was tucked in for the morning at home and got creased and crumply. Usually it is not wavy. I do have a wider black belt. My parquet flooring is original from 1972 with a slight refresh in 2014. Thanks :).

SISI Precisely why his name is Pretty Boy! Well, initially it was just Pretty when we thought he was a she.

Thanks all. Seems like untucked is the favourite so far. Or tucked with no belt, which are my favourites too. Subsequently I did wear it tucked in with no belt for a brief outing. I'm usually not a tucker but was unsure of these proportions.

Please keep the opinions coming for future wears.

It's not you, Suz! Store sizes are particularly inconsistent the last two seasons. Your Gap experience is absurd!

(Not sure about the weight loss drug connection).

I echo kkards, 100%.

COS has been the biggest surprise. Many of their clothes run smaller this year (and they usually run wide and long, as you mentioned). I'm sizing up clients at least one size!

Zara is running big in many of their tops. Jackets are still TTS and on the narrower side.

Athleta usually runs big, although the Skyline Barrels - which are a HUGE hit and their best selling bottoms of all time - run a size small.

MANGO used to be sized on the narrower side - now they run big in most items except the dresses and fitted jackets. I'm sizing many clients down!

Talbots used to run wide too. They have narrowed their fits the last year. More TTS at the moment.

G-Star jeans fit a size smaller this year. Tops fit bigger.

Maybe markets are trying to cater more to Gen Z, who like both BIG clothes and SUPER TINY TIGHT clothes - across genders. I'm also shopping more in the mens departments with clients than I used to. Especially for jeans, knitwear, and tees for tall clients.

Speaking of Gen Z - Arirtzia's Effortless Pants are all over the place! The SAME style online in different colours fits completely differently. The navy pinstriped pants we have are perfect! Find #1. Ordered the same size in a micro check - FIND #2 - and the rise is longer, length is longer, and waist is smaller. Back it went!

Yep, I agree that sizing and fit are all over the place these days. Really interesting points that KKARDS makes about it all as well. I'm not much of an online shopper but rather fortunate to have lots of these retailers available locally, so I can try things on in person. Even trying things on person is a real crap shoot as 99 % of what I try on never fits properly either. Like JENNI NZ, I have no patience for the hassle of returning items and waiting for refunds.

The whole oversized trend at one point must have been a godsend for the industry as they basically only had to put out a few sizes to fit most people, but when styles are more tailored and fitted that's where it all seems to start to fall apart and let's not even get into the lousy quality of what's been offered on top of it all. Yes, I think the growing use of Ozempic etc... will definitely effect fashion's sizing moving forward if it isnt already happening in some markets.

I had a similar experience with a too short haircut. I had brought in a photo of what should have been easy to approximate. My hair is wavy ...but not curly as yours. So it seems my hairstylist confused my chin (the length it was supposed to be) with my earlobes...the length it turned out to be. Looked like a bobblehead. I did express disappointment as I was paying for the cut. He texted me later and apologized and said he'd give me a discount on my next haircut. It was several months later as it had to grow back out to below chin length but, of course, he forgot about his promise to discount my next haircut. I didn't feel like pressing the issue at the time. But I think I'll be looking for another hairstylist. That is never an easy road to go down either.

I don't do a lot of clothes shopping these days but wanted to get new jeans recently. It appeared to me that within the SAME brand there was inconsistency between styles. I was trying on Levi's in different styles. A medium in one style was not even close to a medium in a different style on the adjacent shelf. Not just that the style was slightly looser or tighter fit by design...the waist, length were vastly different within the same size, in the same brand. Maybe I've just not stayed current with the way pants are being sized and labeled these days. I got frustrated and went home with only one pair although I had intended to buy more.

I love Uniqlo and can't add much to what has already been discussed:
- the designer collabs I never know how to look at; I think the drops must be very limited? Even the NYC, Toronto and Sydney stores didn't have a ton when we were there (yes we visit the Uniqlo wherever we go haha). I think the Sydney one had the most?
- sorry to hear the store attendants weren't welcoming ... My experience is that they are great but not pushy or salesy ... They seem to be there to keep things organized and flowing, and help when asked (which suits introvert me just fine!)
- it is definitely a store for basics and foundation pieces primarily, although DS in particular has found some more statement-y pieces in their collabs
- their linen rocks from a price:quality standpoint

Hope you find some great stuff there Lisa! If you follow Renata Farbman, she's a Canadian stylist who will sometimes post a what to buy/what to skip at Uniqlo roundup. I don't always agree with her assessment but it is always good food for thought. She will sometimes mention what works best for specific body types too which I find helpful.

I guess I haven't done enough shopping this year to have noticed that it is any worse than usual, but sizing is always an issue for me. Bottoms are actually a bit easier for me right now because of the abundance of elastic waists - stylish elastic waists :) I agree that it is especially frustrating when buying the exact same item and having it not fit the same. So annoying.

Good conversation. Thank you.

Just home from urgent care due to an infected bite . A Deer fly snuck in through the placket of DH long sleeved shirt.
I had searched before it got infected and permethrin came up, but still curious about the safety. We prefer not to use DEET and stick to coverage, we use a repellent that is based on essential oils and that has worked pretty good until this episode. Will just have to up the ante regarding coverage.

It's too bad there is so much varying information out there. After we got home the provider who cared for my husband sent some online info. One of them was to wear Light colored clothing so it is easier to spot ticks, crawling on them.

I think it’s a combination of many factors.
1. anyone who imports into the USA has experienced supply chain disruption (due to the changing tariff situation) in the last year. That means that “normal” processes have probably been upended or at a minimum been changed which impacts everything
2. The current fashion cycle, with both oversized fits and cropped tops making sizing a challenge. And it’s important to remember it’s the clothes not you.
3. Some retailers-looking at you Zara, just don’t care. Their objective is sell a lot and sell it fast. The intersection of those 2 is how they make their profit-so consistent sizing is a nice to have but not a necessity

I haven’t heard about sizing being downward adjusted from glp-1 use but it makes sense if many people use these drugs now. I haven’t found sizing easy in the past as is, so this trend just makes it that much harder to get a proper fit.

I’ve always preferred in store shopping for this reason, sizing (and materials) are so much easier and faster for me to figure out when I shop in a store and can try on versus online ordering.. Too often my online orders end up at consignment because the piece was final sale or I end up outside the return window.

This post resonates with me. One of the less than healthy ways I dealt with the stress of the pandemic was to purchase a lifetime supply of Lululemon and Athleta leggings, bike shorts, and skorts when I could wear them to WFH. I also bought a number of coordinating Lululemon tops. Now I am stuck with the same workout clothes I have been wearing for the past six years and feeling like I can’t justify buying anything new because there is no way I will wear out what I already own in my lifetime. it feels so uninteresting and blah.

My only saving graces are that I wear interesting quilted jackets to/fro yoga and bought some Anatomie cargo shorts, which are the greatest. I also still enjoy my Vuori joggers and a few Free People Movement items.

Maybe if I found some workout wear that I love I could begin to cull my current collection and consider the overbuying a learning experience, but I have yet to find anything that I’m that enthusiastic about. I am not loving Athleta right now, I only find an occasional piece at Lululemon, and Alo skews too young/revealing to my eye. Varley and Beyond Yoga are hit or miss.

I will have to check out some of the brands in this thread or maybe just bide my time until I find styles that interest me.

We started shopping Uniqlo on our annual trip to Japan. The quality is stellar, especially the HeatTech and merino pieces. While I used to be satisfied with a single annual haul from the Ikebukuro store where we stocked up on basics, I started shopping Uniqlo online during the off-season between trips. I often shop their collab pieces, cotton t-shirts, unisex sweaters, and jersey barrel leg pants. The Japanese stores generally carry higher quality items than the US counterpart, but the quality of the US items are still impressive and hold up after many launderings. I have shopped Uniqlo stores in various cities in Europe as well. The stores are usually neat, well-stocked, and the employees are helpful. There are core pieces that never change, but there are enough monthly inventory additions to keep me interested enough that I have the Uniqlo app and check it frequently. I would encourage you to give Uniqlo another try after the store has been open for a time. Hopefully the experience will improve.

I buy less online than most I think, but do agree from my experience that sizing is a mess. I have size Small to XL in my closet at the moment and almost bought an XXL tee recently.

I find shoes quite consistent and have more success with shoe sizing across retailers than clothing. It has put me off online shopping to a large extent.

Yes weight loss drugs do seem to be having an impact; there are lots of good things about that, but there are a few worrying things too.

I suppose Suz this is why I am still mostly a die-hard bricks and mortar shopper. I do do a lot of research online if I am unfortunate enough to need to replace a favourite item due to wear, but then I try to attend an actual store (most of our websites will say find in-store so I can work out if a local branch has the item or even one in a different size so I can feel the fabric etc and then maybe order a different size). This is acceptable to me because I buy minimal amounts of clothing these days and so a small amount of trawling around stores is able to be coped with, I can usually tie it in with some other errands. I really hate doing returns and only do it occasionally for shoes from Styletread. I just find it so random how various items fit and thus prefer to try them on in store. If they don’t work at least I can leave them there and not have to package them up, get them to the post, etc.
I fully realise that most Fabbers have moved to online shopping. Think I am going to be a die-hard who doesn’t change!

Irina, yes -- that was exactly my experience with the Gap jeans. They were a replacement for a worn item. Same size -- but different fit. I have read that jeans in different colours can fit differently because blue denim differs in the weave from solid coloured denim in other colours. But stll...

I did look at the item measurements for the items I ordered at MD and at their recommended size -- and items were still too big. But you are right -- knowing how it is all made helps explain some of these problems. I think you are right that taking a philosophical approach is the way to go. I've just been shocked at the range of issues I've had this year across so many brands. I usually experience this a couple of times a season, but not in every single store I shop in!

Lisa, interesting to hear that about the Ozempic / sizing connection -- I'm not imaginging things. And yes, I typically find bottoms more difficult to fit, too. In any of the stores. Though lately, it seems as if tops are equally bad!

Roberta, good points and good to keep in mind. As Irina notes, some manufacturers also do item measurements. MD on some items, and Boden and a few others. I should always remember to delve that far when ordering.

Massimo Dutti provides measurements on items that I find useful. But even with using it, still fit is unpredictable.
Learning history of universal sizing made me more philosophical about how well can made-to-wear clothes fits.

What annoys me the most is when I do a repeat purchase of a same item but in different color or new this season and it fits different from a previous purchase.
