Yellow and black?

Today I bought this yellow top:

I think someone here already has this - Kristen?

I had tried it on a month ago and thought it was cute, but hesitated because I have it in my head I look awful in yellow. But for some reason, today it didn't look quite as awful. And I adore the cut of this top and the ruffles!!!

My question is: is it okay to wear this top with a black cardi or black vest? I did try it on with my black V-neck cardi and vest, and both looked cute, shape-wise! The ruffles just look so cute laying in the V of a cardi or vest. But, I was worried that black + yellow is too.... Bumblebee????

What do you think, and if not black, what WOULD you pair this shade of yellow with?

(I plan to wear this without a layer on hotter summer days, but the rate we are going we may not have any hotter days!!! So I want layering options... )

I'd have to see it with black, but fear of looking like a bee has always deterred me from the black and yellow combo. I love yellow with turquoise -- it is so fresh! But I could definitely see it with cream or brown if you want something less vibrant. My vote is for a turquoise (coral would be sharp, too) cardigan. Cute top!!!

I LOVE yellow and wearing yellow. It instantly makes me feel cheerful. Since you and I have similar coloring (we're both "Springs," right?) I'm surprised that you thought you look awful in the color. Actually, I can imagine you in yellow and I think it will look great on you!

I've found black and yellow to be most successful when paired with white. It freshens it up a lot and keeps me from looking like a bumble bee. So either white jeans, or a white denim jacket or something like that.

Alternatives to black would be any shade of blue (although navy blue is a favorite of mine), purple, maybe even green.

Ana, no I am not a spring! I look dreadful and washed out in most items at Jcrew, as much as I admire them. I could not wear half the colors you wear so well!

I would say I am probably a summer. I look best in colors with blue undertones (such as cranberry red instead of a tomato red). But, I can do a pastel yellow or lemony yellow. This top is pretty bright. I think it is working today because I had my hair done and he toned down the ashiness by adding in some gold.

I do remember having a favorite tee shirt when I was 13 that was this exact shade of yellow! I bought it on vacation at the Jersey shore. It had Mr Bill on it (does anyone remember Mr Bill Ohhhh NOooooo! am I dating myself??). I think it worked back then because I had a deep tan and my hair was nearly white from being on the beach!

Totally agree it is a cheerful color.

Oh, I thought you were a Spring! I have a terrible memory. I want to see a photo of you in the top! Will you post one when you get some time? I still think yellow would be a good color on you. I really like the yellow bag on you that you are holding in the photo on the blog post today. Is that a cooler mustardy yellow or something?

Shiny, that's such a pretty top. I immediately thought of gray with it- seems like Angie had a post where she combined yellow and gray (silvery gray) and I thought it was beautiful together.

Anyone else remember this?

I love yellow with black and white. Partnered a yellow top with black/white pinstripe suit and it was great. With all black - not so sure.

Yellow and gray is my second favorite - in fact I wore that today.

Yellow and white is great too.

sinead, I remember that post - it is what inspired my challenge outfit! I love grey with yellow and white, always seems like such a winning combination.

shiny, I like brown with yellow too. Today I wore my bright yellow Anne Klein top with a lightweight 3/4 sleeve brown jacket and blue jeans. The yellow of this top is more of a golden yellow but I still think brown jacket + jeans works well. The outfit even got the stamp of approval from DH who has a very discerning eye for colors.

I've never thought of colors in terms of season appropriate-ness so I'm not sure if this combo is as summer appropriate as navy+white+yellow, yellow+white+black or yellow+grey+white.

Shiny, this thread is timely for me as I've been trying to decide whether or not to keep a bright yellow jacket with black buttons. The bee image is just too strong to enjoy these colors together so it's going back. I second yellow with grey and with navy, especially with a touch of white.

I do have that top, and in truth, I haven't worn it yet! I keep trying it on with different combos but nothing has made it to the point of pulling off the tags yet. (I keep everything intact until I wear it; I've returned so much since January!)

I had the same bumblebee worry, which is part of why I haven't put it with anything yet. But I just got a pair of light brown pants that would work, so maybe tomorrow. Also gray, khakis, white, and any non-black neutral would work for bottoms, and if you did one of those you could probably then do a black vest or cardi. Or try purple, navy blue, that lovely dove grey...

Maybe that's my problem with not wearing; I have too many choices and can't make up my mind! LOL.

I have the same ATL top but in the brown paisley print! I like yellow best with white or navy (or cobalt). I often wear some of my yellow tops with dark denim jeans. I agree with Ana - I think you could do your black cardi or vest if you pair it with with jeans or pants - less bumble bee that way!

Try with grey jeans or a grey skirt.. grey is the new black here! The combinations is more toned down than with black.

Hmm, I have one grey cardi and one white cardi, but neither one is a V-neck, and this top really wants a V-neck. I really like the way it looks with a vest, but I have had zero luck finding a vest in any color other than black. Oh, and my white jeans don't fit me at the moment.

I guess I could pair it with my khaki short sleeve jacket? And I have a pair of khaki slacks that will work. I will have to play around with it. I'm not giving up on it just yet....

Okay looks like this top will work with a scoop-neck cardi... I will have to play with that. What brand is your purple cardi, it's adorable?

I think that yellow and black is fine, I wear it all the time. My yellow is probably more of a gold yellow than a bright yellow. I think that it is more about the contrast of both bright and black being very bold and if that would be overwhelming for your petite frame. I would try the outfit and post it with the black, I know what you mean about V-necks working so much better.

I love yellow! I bought a mustard yellow dress last week, and I wanted to pair it with black leggings and my husband just went "bzzzzz". Way to kill it, Babe.

I think Jean is right; the gold yellows work better with black. Brights are good with light greys, navys, etc, as are mustard. Actually, mustard and olive are one of my favorite combos...why don't I own any of either, and why am I suddenly hungry? LOL

Shiny, the sweater is Merona from Target. I just got it on clearance from their website. I was very surprised at cut and feel of it -- much better quality than I am used to with Target.
